Chapter 4:

Miss Taylor
and
Her Two Monkeys

All the animals walked through Grandpa's gate to go to Rusty the dog's birthday party at Mr. Morgan's house. They were all dressed beautifully and everthing was going just fine when something awful happened. Grandpa had forgotten all about the grasshopper and the mice, and they were so busy dancing that at first they didn't even notice that the other animals were leaving.

When one of the mice looked up and saw that they were leaving, he let out an awful screech to get their attention. You wouldn't think that such a little fieldmouse could make such a noise!

Well, one thing about animals is that you have to be careful around them because they get frightened so easily. The little mouse's screech frightened the 15 baby chicks and they went running is all directions. Their mommies and daddies were frightened that the baby chicks would get lost, or maybe even stepped on by the bigger animals. So the mommies and daddies went running after the baby chicks.

Now with the 15 baby chicks and the two hens and the two roosters running all over the place, the duck and the sheep and the cows and the horse became frightened even though they didn't know what was the matter. So they started running too! But they had no particular place to run, and everybody just seemed to be running around in circles.

And what a sight it was! All kinds of animals of all sizes running and running. Dust was flying through the air, and that's not all! Their clothes were falling off and flying through the air too. Ribbons and hats and flowers and just about everything went flying through the air.

Finally, everyone got so tired that they stopped running around. Grandpa and the animals just stood there and looked at the mess. Everyone was all dusty and needed their hair brushed. What clothes were still on the animals were crooked or falling off, and most of the clothes were all over the ground.

Grandpa was feeling so sad that a tear rolled down his cheek. When the other animals saw his tear, some of them started to cry, too. You should have heard the sheep. Baah. Baah. Baah.

Then, just when everyone was so sad, Grandpa heard someone coming down the road. When he looked up, what do you think he saw? Why, he couldn't believe his eyes!

It was his neighbor Miss Taylor who worked at the City Zoo. And who do you think she had with her but two lady monkeys! One was walking on her left side and one was walking on her right side, and each monkey was holding one of her hands. And what do you think they were wearing?

Why, they were all in pink. Everything was pink from top to bottom. Pink hats with pink ribbons. Pink dresses with pink scarfs. Even pink purses and pink shoes and pink socks. Can you believe that?

And when Miss Taylor and her two monkeys saw Grandpa and all the animals and the terrible mess, they just stopped and stared. Then Miss Taylor and her two monkeys just shook their heads. What a mess, they thought. Can you believe that?

Well, if you didn't already know it, there's nothing lady monkeys like to do more than get all dressed up. When they have children, they love to get them all dressed up, too. And they even love to dress up dolls. Why, they love to dress up anythng! So Miss Taylor and her two monkeys went right to work.

Before the animals knew what was happening Miss Taylor and her two monkeys were brushing their hair and brushing the dust off their clothes and putting them back on straight. And in no time at all everyone was all dressed up again and ready for the party just like nothing had ever happened. Even Blinkie's new red coat looked as beautiful as ever.

Grandpa could hardly believe it. He figured that if he was ever going to get all of his animals ready for a party again, he was going to ask Miss Taylor and her two lady monkeys to help. Why, they even had an extra scarf that they made into three little scarfs for the mice to wear!
