Eric's Guide to FTP, Counters, and Geoguide

Make your changes to the page and then Save the page on your hard drive.
You then need to Publish the page to Geocities.
Choose the Publish button on the tool bar in Netscape Composer.

My address is ftp://ftp.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Cottage/1345/
so yours would be: ftp://ftp.geocities.com/YOUR SUBURB/YOUR BLOCK/YOUR NUMBER/
Fill out your user name and password (which I hope you have changed by now).

If you do not want to publish, you can go to Geocities File Manager, go to: http://geocities.datacellar.net/members/tools/file_manager.html, and upload your HTML files, gif's and jpg's.

The following are better instructions on how to add a counter to the page:

  1. After publishing go to http://geocities.datacellar.net/members/tools/file_manager.html
  2. Give them your user name and password when they ask for it.
  3. Click submit.
  4. Click on the check box beside the page you just uploaded.
  5. Scroll down to the editor list drop down box.
  6. Make sure it says "Advanced Editor."
  7. Click the button that says "edit."
  8. Now paste in the code, between the <body> tags

  9.         <CENTER><!--?G!!TEXTB-->You are visitor number <!--?G!!TEXTE-->
            <img src="/cgi-bin/counter"></CENTER>
This is the script you should copy if you only want one counter.
If you want more than one:
            <img src="/cgi-bin/counter/#">
In place of # should be a number 1, 2, 3...etc.  a different number for each counter.
  10. Click the Save button.
You won't be able to tell in preview if your counter is working.  When you view the page with your
browser you will see the counter.

GeoGuide:

  1. Paste <CENTER><!--#geoguide--></CENTER> after the first body tag.  If you have no beginning body tag, you will need to add one to make the GeoGuide work.
  2. Save.
  3. To turn on GeoGuide: go to http://geocities.datacellar.net/members/
  4. On the red and white tools buttons choose "Homesteading," the first button. The address is now http://geocities.datacellar.net/members/tools/homestead.html
  5. Choose Add-ons and the address is now http://geocities.datacellar.net/members/addons/
  6. Click on the first button which is:  GeoGuide:  Your one-stop center for installing the GeoGuide, customizing its features and joining the GeoGuide Banner Exchange program.
  7. Give them your member name and password when they ask for it.
  8. Click Submit.
  9. First you need to configure your GeoGuide.  Click on the button that says "set up/modify my GeoGuide."
  10. Select the options you want.
  11. Click the button that says "configure my GeoGuide."
  12. You will be asked a few questions about the options you chose.  Answer them.
  13. Click the button that says "set up my GeoGuide."
  14. Click the button that says "GeoGuide Manager."
Now, ACTIVATING your GeoGuide:
Note:  On the page is a link to the GeoGuide FAQ (Frequently Asked  Questions) if you need
some help, your answer might be in a FAQ.
    http://geocities.datacellar.net/members/programs/geoguide/faq.html

But for now:

  1. Click on the button that says "Activate my GeoGuide."
  2. On the next page, it shows you a list of your pages, now click the "on" radio button for the pages that have the GeoGuide code that you installed on them.
  3. Click the button at the bottom of the page that says "activate."
NOTE:  If you modify a page, re-upload a page, or put in a new page, you will have to go and
