At First I Thought

At first I thought
Your “self” was true.
I thought you cared
For those you knew.

At first I thought
Your heart was gold.
Then it faded—
Your act was old.

At first I thought
Your ears believed.
Now I know,
They just deceive.

At first I thought
Your words were pure.
But the lies they’ve told—
I’m now not sure.

At first I thought
Your smile was real.
But because of it,
Oh the rage I feel.

At first I thought
Your eyes saw deep inside.
But this, now I know,
To me, had also lied.

At first I thought
All of this was wrong.
But finding out the truth
Didn’t take me long.
