SSA seeks to fulfil this role and mission through a greater and more conscientious endeavour in promoting social and community work and services, cultural activities and educational tasks, based on the rich humanism and
compassion of Buddhism and centered around the Buddhist principle of respect for the dignity of each individual's life. For example, we have participated in many of the National Day Parades, Chingay Parades and the 17th SEA Games. We also helped in organizing Lunar New Year Gifts Box project which drew overwhelming support from the public in their donations. These were then distributed to charities and poor families. Furthermore, in 1993, we witnessed the opening of Soka Kindergarten. This marked the very first step in our endeavour in promoting the SGI ideal of humanistic education.
Other than the above mentioned island-wide activities, we conduct discussion meetings in members' houses.
In a relaxed and open atmosphere, friends and relatives come together to learn about the Buddhist philosophy of Nichiren Daishonin. This forum of heart-to-heart dialogue is one of the important activities in the Buddhist practice. Participation in discussion meetings have given many people strengths and encouragement to face the difficulties in life and to carry out correct Buddhist practice. SSA also conducts study meetings to have in-depth study of Buddhist philosophy.
The membership of SSA comprises of people coming from all walks of life – ranging from different age groups to social and educational backgrounds. Despite and transcending these differences, members work together harmoniously all the time towards their common goal, that is the propagation of this Buddhist faith.
