KELLY THE WILD "COYOTE" DOG

Back in 1971, I was in community Theater doing a play called "Harvey". It was a play about an invisible rabbit. My part was nurse Kelly. We had rehersals 4 nights a week and I usually got home around 11:00pm.

One night when I came home, there was a beautiful blond german shepherd standing in my yard. I called to her, but she ran off. The next day some neighbors said she was a wild "Coyote" dog that was dangerous. Every one was throwing things at her to drive her away.

I did not sense any meaness in her, so the next night I came home I had a package of hot dogs with me. She was there waiting. I coaxed her to ward me with the hot dogs and she came within a couple of feet of me. I could see she was very lean, and not part coyote, but possibly part wolf.

Our nightly ritual went on for a few more days, and then she was sitting on the porch eating out of my hand and letting me pet her. I decided to adopt her. Our little town had only 600 people and most of them were out to get her.

I named my new friend Kelly, after my name in the play that brought us together. She took to me and my son like we had known each other all our lives. My 1st Husband was not a very nice man, and when he came into the house, Kelly stood between me and him and growled. He wanted me to get rid of her but I stood my ground. He could no longer raise his voice or anything else at me when she was around.

I had had strong connections with other animals before, almost like telepathy, but with Kelly it was like we knew what each other was thinking all the time. She was my shadow, she went with me everywhere I went except to work. She chased a bully out of our yard that tried to pick on him. She never hurt anyone, but she was our protector.

My husband and Kelly never got along. So one day he told me she had to go and he had found a couple who wanted her that lived way out in the country. Both my son and I pleaded with him, but it didn't do any good.

A week later the people came to our house to pick her up. I had explained to Kelly what was going to happen and she stayed even closer to me. I introduced them to Kelly and told her she had to go with them. We looked deeply in each other's eyes for a few minutes, then she gave me a kiss and walked over to her new owners. She liked them, but kept her eyes on me. I knew she understood, I could see it in her eyes.

Then they took Kelly to their car. She got in with no problems, but kept her eyes on me until we could no longer see each other. That was one of the saddest days of my life, but Kelly will always live on in my heart.
