Afternoon rush hour in Commissioner
Street in 1895 when the town was about nine years old. The building with
the wrought ironwork is Hermann Eckstein's Corner House on the corner of
Simmonds Street. Note "The Chains" across Simmonds.
Between the
Chains - the scene in Simmonds Street, between Commissioner and Market
where, for many years, people met in times of crises. The knot of men in
the middle distance is outside the town's first stock exchange.
