The
center of the universe is, of course, that marvelous land known as Fraggle Rock...
Somewhere in the world, there is a workshop owned by a an inventor named Doc and his Dog, Sprocket. While Doc spends
his days coming up with new ideas, Sprocket is peering into a large hole in the baseboard. He knows that something lives
behind the wall.
Through the hole and down the tunnel, hidden from everyday reality, are brightly lit caves filled with wonderful creatures.
This land, bound together by Magic, is called Fraggle Rock.
The most notable of the creatures who inhabit this beautiful place are the Fraggles.
Fraggles are furry, have tails, and come in all sorts of colors. The Fraggles spend their days laughing, splashing, running, singing, playing games, and telling jokes. They live by
a simple care-free code:
"Dance your cares away,
worries for another day,
let the music play,
down at Fraggle Rock."
Note must also be taken by the Doozers. Doozers are hard-working, little green men, who spend their days building intricate
Doozer constructions. The Doozers have built their towers to be pleasing to the Fraggles' taste buds. If the Fraggles didn't
eat the buildings, the Doozers would quickly run out of building space and would have to move on.
On the other side of Fraggle Rock, there is a hole leading to the realm of the Gorgs. The Gorgs are large and hairy giants who think they
rule the universe. Their garden; namely the Radishes, are the Fraggles' only source of food (aside from Doozer towers),
so every day or so, the Fraggles must emerge from the Rock, and steal food from the Gorgs. This drives the Gorgs crazy,
and whenever they see them, they try to catch or thump the elusive Fraggles.
Just beyond the Gorgs lies the all-knowing Marjorie, the Trash Heap. When the right ingredients of coffee grounds, banana peels,
and tin cans came together, this pile of garbage suddenly came to life. The Gorgs don't know that she is alive, but the Fraggles
make the dangerous journey across Gorg territory to recieve her wisdom.
Fraggle Rock was created by Jim Henson Productions (known now as The Jim Henson Company). Fraggle Rock made its television
debut in 1983 and was a stunning success. When Jim Henson concieved Fraggle Rock, he wanted to create a show that could
literally bring peace to the world. To do this, the creatures of Fraggle Rock have all been interconnected with nature and each other.
If a piece of the chain is broken, the rest falls apart. This is the way of our world as well as the world of
the Fraggles. Across the span of Fraggle Rock's 96 episodes, the world changes from a place with Fraggles, Doozers, Gorgs, and
a dog at odds with each other, to a world in which peace and harmony have been established between all of them.
For those who have grown up with the show, and remember the lessons that it taught, Fraggle Rock holds the answers to many
of the problems we face today. And its characters have a very special place within our hearts. We cannot leave the Magic; as
if we would ever actually want to!
