2. creative cooking, folk art, etc. this way, they can
also, inadvertently
earn parts of the badges. the junior
badgebook may also, have ideas
in their requirements. how about jewelry..make
fimo clay beads, then
string onto thin leather shoelace/jewelry
cording for necklaces/bracelets.
seed beads and safety pins are fun
-- there are lots of books of ideas at
the local craft stores. to use up
lots of yarn that had been sitting around
camp for YEARS, I had planks of wood
cut into squares (I think they
were 8x8x1/2). the girls sanded all
surfaces smooth. the cheap, white,
fluted paper plates fit within the
square beautifully. 'finishing' nails were
hammered into the plate around its
circumference, every other flute,
until the paper plate was attached
to the board. the nails went in only a
little it ...the plate (pattern) was
removed. the yarn was knotted to one
nail, and skipped over to another
nail approximately 1/3 the distance,
and eventually a pattern, as in a
spirograph, was formed. several colors,
layers, patterns were produced by
the girls. they did not chose to follow
any of the directions that I had copied
from craft books. the result?
interesting and individual works of
art. a tab on the back and they were
suitable for framing. don't forget
the value of cute little things --
otherwise known as swaps. this could
be invaluable as the girls start to
travel to other locations.. a pin
hot glued on the back makes wearable
art..they can all be attached to a
camp tie/scarf/hat/album/corkboard/etc.
3. How about painting those bird houses like the country
craft stores
are doing? Tye dying is always a kick
- not just shirts but shorts, sock,
hat, hair scunchy! How about Indian
(seed) beading a necklace?
Making picture frames from nature.
Quilt squares, puppets (marionettes.)
4. Poured candles made in milk cartons with ice, Beadie
Critter necklaces
Bubble wand necklaces made from empty
film canisters.
Homemade beads made from wrapping
paper.
Homemade sidewalk chalk.
Fossil prints
Older girls also liked making the
friendship pins from seed beads and
safety pins
5. How about plaster masks of the girls' own faces?
6. How about hemp necklaces? It is basically macramé
on a smaller scale.
Pony beads can be added for color
(and are much less expensive than
other beads you see on hemp jewelry).
They are very "in" right now.
You can probably find an instruction
book for these at your local craft
store.
7. Another hot craft is mosaics, made out of smashed pottery
and a grout.
On the craft show they showed a mold
from Faster Plaster where you
could make craft pieces and paint
your own.. They uses the mosaics
on a variety of things, votive cups,
picture frames, small furniture like
stools and shelves
