1 large to medium wooden bead
3 medium to small wooden beads
1 medium to large bell
Overview:
The necklace consists of 5 knots on each side of the
neck, with one
knot at the end pulling the necklace together with one
bead, then
splitting the ropes and placing 3 more beads and knots
with one final
longer rope, knotted with a bell at the end.
The 5 colors of ribbon represent the five Worlds of Interest.
The 10
knots represent the ten parts of the Girl Scout Law.
the large bead
pulling it all together represents the World of Girl
Scouting, we are
one community. The three beads represent the three
parts of the Girl
Scout Promise. The bell is used for gathering/calling
together.
Step by Step instructions:
1. Take all five colors of ribbon and make them even
at one end.
2. Place them around your neck and center them.
3. Mark the spot for your first knot with your finger
approximately
at your collar bone. Tie your first overhand knot.
4. Putting the ribbons back around your neck, center the
knot you
just made over your collar bone and measure the next
knot on the
other side over your collar bone. Tie your second
overhand knot.
5. Once you have your first two knots you can put the
necklace on a
flat surface for the rest of the knot tying.
6. Using your three middle fingers, measure a span (3
fingers wide)
from your first knot. Tie an overhand knot.
Continue measuring 3
finger width spans until you have 5 knots on one side.
Then do the
same on the other side, trying to keep the knots evenly
spaced like
the side just completed, until you have 5 knots on each
side (a total
of 10).
7. Once you have all 10 knots completed, gather all the
ropes
together and slip on the large wooden bead and make a
knot to hold it
in place.
8. You now have 10 strands of rope through 1 bead.
Split the strands
into 3 groups - 3 on one side, 3 on the other side and
4 in the
middle. Attach a small bead to each grouping of
strands, leave at
least 1 1/2 to 2 inches of ribbon hanging down.
Tie a knot to hold
the bead in place.
9. On the middle group of strands (4 ribbons together),
attach the
bell to the end of the ribbons with another knot.
Trim all excess
ribbon (but not too close to the knot; otherwise it will
untie).
10 Your necklace is complete! Congratulations.
