Guidelines are personal and different for each family based on the ages of your children and the needs in your household. We have listed some guidelines to think about, and you can expand and take away as the need arises.
Guidelines For Your Child:
1. How much time is your child allowed to spend on the computer?
2. Is your child allowed to surf alone? If not, who is allowed to supervise his/her surfing?
3. Are there certain areas you allow your child to visit, if so what are they?
Is your child aware of how to find these sites easily and without searching?
4. Is your child allowed to chat online? If so at which sites?
5. What are you guidelines for chatting? Must it be monitored?
6. What information is your child allowed to give out over the Internet?
7. Is your child allowed to use email? If so do you monitor all mail going in and out?
8. Does your child understand what to do if they find a site that is inappropriate or if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation with someone online?
A Checklist For Mom and Dad:
1. Have you discussed the dangers of the Internet with your child?
2. Have you spent time surfing with your child? Do you know where they like to spend time and what activities they are interested in?
3. Have you checked all of the sites your child is allowed to visit including the links off of those pages as well?
4. Have you checked the safety of your child's or your family's WebPage?
