Safety Tips

Being safe when you're home alone is very important. Please keep the following tips in mind if you are at home by yourself, or if you are babysitting.

NEVER tell anyone that you are alone.  If someone calls on the telephone, asking for your mom or dad, you can tell the person that "She(or He) can't come to the phone right now, but I'll have her(or him) call you as soon as she (or he) can". Make sure all the doors and windows are closed and locked too.

KEEP A LIST OF IMPORTANT TELEPHONE NUMBERS by the telephones in your house. This list should include several trusted neighbors or relatives, police, fire company, rescue squad, poison control (if you babysit), and any other important numbers you can think of--have a parent help you with the list.

If you ever have an emergency while you're home by yourself, DO NOT PANIC!!!  Keep calm, take a few deep breaths, and do what needs to be done. If there's a fire, leave the house immediately and call the fire department from a neighbor's house. If you have pets, don't EVER go into a burning house to save a pet. Leave the door open, and they will get out of the house safely. If a child you are babysitting has gotten hurt, call the rescue squad and answer the dispatcher's questions calmly, and stay on the line until they tell you that you should hang up the phone.
