Waitakere City

Waitakere City is a great place to live. It is just west to Auckland (New Zealand's largest city) and is often mistaken for West Auckland. It has many parks, beaches, bush walks and native animals.

Parks

Waitakere City has many beautiful parks and reserves. To name just a few there is Ceramco (close to our school), Cragavon, Parrs and Crum Park.

Beaches

Waitakere City is home to many great surf beaches. They have many attractions other from surf also, Lion Rock is a known land mark at Piha (one of the best surf beaches) and Iron (or black) sand is known at many out-west beaches. Many beaches in Waitakere are calm too. What a funny city!

Bush Walks

Waitakere City has many wonderful bush walks, where you can follow a track, listen and watch the native birds sing, listen to the waterfall and look at the silent giant native trees. It is a truly amazing experience. Some especially good walks include: the Cascades Walk, Nihotipu Tram-line Walk and The Kauri Loop Walk.

Native Animals

We have many native animals here:

Fantails are beautiful birds, they are just smaller than sparrows, they are mostly black and have a long tail shaped like a fan. They are lovely company when you are on a bush walk, they follow you and come close to you. This sounds good if you don't have a zoom lens on your camera, but they are very hard to take a photo of because they move so quickly.

Tuis are about the size of a blackbird or bigger than a sparrow. They are completely black except for a white tuff on their chest.

Moreporks are nocturnal birds and are often heard at night (usually 1-3 hours after sunset or later). They are an owl.

There are many other native animals that live in Waitakere City. So we will be adding to this list.
