A Philosophy Group from 4 Nero and 4 Verde discussed their thoughts
as to the advantages of either living in the past or in the present.
WHY IT'S BETTER TO BE IN
THE PAST THAN THE PRESENT
WHY IT'S BETTER TO BE IN
THE PRESENT THAN THE PAST
There were no cars so there wouldn't
be any pollution.  Emma

We wouldn't depend on machines for
everything. We would do everything
by hand.  Jed

There wouldn't be so much concrete
and we wouldn't hurt ourselves
so much.  Jessica

We wouldn't have to wear a school
uniform.  Kahlia

I would like it when the world wasn't
mechanised, with all the games and
computers.  Carrick

There wouldn't be as many cars and
planes going by and it would be easier
to listen to your teacher.  Jed

100 years ago there wasn't junk food
and there wouldn't be the pollution
all the wrappers make.  Nushi

I liked the classrooms and the little
schools like the cottage. You wouldn't
find syringes in the street.  Alexandra

It would be good to use your brains
and books and not computers and it
would be better because your desks
were apart: now, if someone sits next to
you they can annoy you. I like the
desks that lift up.  Kahlia

There wouldn't have been a canteen, so
you'd always have to pack your lunch
because you wouldn't be able to buy it
at school.  Frances

There wouldn't have been coloured
photographs. It would have been
expensive to buy a camera.  Alexander

100 years ago the children used to
be caned at school.  Harriet

There wouldn't have been places like the
Cottage for After School Care and they
wouldn't have had the tennis courts to
play in at lunchtime.  Natalie

There wouldn't be as many activiites as
there are now, like dancing and singing
and band.  Frances

It would have taken you ages to do a
test - they only had little wooden things
called abacus.  Jessica

You would never have been able to see
the rest of the world. A ship would
take a year just to get to America.  Jed

You had to use feathers and ink - that's
what they used to use because they
didn't have pens.  Kahlia

The teachers used to have canes and
they would whack you if you had been
naughty.  Jed

THE PAST VERSUS THE PRESENT
In the past your homework would have
been good because you would not have
got distracted by the T.V. and there
was nothing else to do to stop you
working. If you were having music it
was not as loud so it did not disturb
the class next door because you could
not play the music very loudly. I
don't think there were as many kids
in a class so if the teacher did a
running record it would be less likely
to be as noisy.

Heydon - 2 Viola
In the past you would think for yourself
and not use a computer to think for you.
Using books helps you to learn instead
of using a computer. Computers are not
good for your thinking when you do maths
and spelling because the computer can do
the work for you. Maybe in the future
they will all work on computers in the class.

Walking to school would save you energy
and keep you healthy instead of coming
to school in the car or the bus.

Oscar - 2 Viola
THE PRESENT VERSUS THE FUTURE
I think that it is better in the present than it will be in the future because
you get a better education and you aren't cheating by using a computer to do
your spelling and your maths. I think in the future you would have computers
on your desk and also you would probably have encyclopaedias on the computer.
I know some people don't agree with me, but I think I am right. I think that
it will not be the same in the playground in the future and in the city the
buildings will be different. The school might be built underground
because it will be so hot. I think it just wouldn't be fun for me. Nearly all
my friends think the future will be better than the present but I don't.
