After an unusually hot spring day at school, the children
came into class pulling the legs of their track suit pants
up and complaining of how hot they were in their uniforms. This led to an interesting discussion about school uniforms.
We decided to investigate what children would have worn to school in the olden days and explored how they would have felt
when they played sport. Here is some of the work we did and some of the discoveries we made.
|
We made two new classmates. One of them is wearing
our school uniform and the other is wearing the kind
of clothes that children may have worn 100 years ago.

This is Glenmore Road Public School
and we are in 1998. We wear blue and
yellow shirts. We are proud of our
uniform because we like our school
and we like the teachers too. We
wear school hats so we don't get
sunburnt. I wear blue shorts and
a blue hat and I like it very much
because blue is my favourite colour.

We are very proud of our school uniform
at Glenmore Road. We wear a school hat
and a T-shirt and some pants and school
shoes and socks and when it is raining
we wear a school raincoat and we are
comfortable in our uniform.
Timmy
I like the colours because yellow is my
favourite colour and blue is my second. Leah

We are very proud of our school uniform
because we like it. I wear a skirt and
a short sleeved top, a school hat and a
pair of school shoes. I think school is good.
Sasha
I like the Glenmore Road sign on our
uniform because it tells everyone which
school we go to. Miles

At our school we are very proud to wear
our school uniform because we wear straw hats
to protect our faces from the sun and skirts
and t-shirts and school shoes. Our hair is
tied back and we wear a tunic in winter or
a track suit to keep us warm. I really like
our uniform because everyone knows which
school we go to. It's the best school.

We decided to compare the kinds of clothes that children wore 100 years ago
with what is worn for school today, so with half of the children wearing
olden day clothes and the other half wearing our school uniform, activities
such as stilt walking, skipping and soccer were undertaken.

In the olden days the
girls wore long dresses
and couldn't run because
they would get their
dresses dirty and their
mums wouldn't be able to
get them clean. Caitlin

In the 1900s there were
lots of children in Glenmore
Road School. The boys wore
puffy pants and stockings
and bow ties and the girls
wore stockings and long
dresses to the ground. Sofia
|
In the 1900s boys wore
puffed up pants and long
sleeves and stockings and
boots and the girls wore
long tunics with long
sleeves too. It trapped
air inside it and they
were uncomfortable. Will
|
When it was the 1900s
the uniforms were not
very comfortable because
when it was hot you had
to wear stockings. But
now it is comfortable
because we can wear short
sleeved shirts. Miles

In the 1900s uniforms
were very uncomfortable.
They were hot. The boys
wore puffy pants to their

The girls wore bows and
long dresses. Christoper

In the olden days the boys
had to wear puffy pants up
to their knees and long
sleeved shirts, stockings
and a bow tie. Their
clothes were uncomfortable
because it would be very
hot to wear clothes like that. Cara
|
In the 1900s the clothes they
wore were really uncomfortable
because they wore puffy pants
but now our uniforms are very
comfortable. Their hair was
tied back in the hot weather.
The boys wore braces and girls
wore very long dresses and they
couldn't run in them and the
boys wore stockings underneath
their puffy pants and a bow tie. Leah

In the olden days the boys
wore puffy pants, long sleeved
shirts, stockings, bows and
boots. The girls wore very
long skirts and very long
dresses, long sleeve shirts,
hair tied back. It would feel
very uncomfortable. Olden day
people only got one bath a week. Lara

Glenmore Road is so cool,
Because we are a Public School.
We read and write every day,
In the playground we can play.
The weekends are our days off,
Or if you're sick or have a cough!
