One day the Lord told Jonah to go to the city of Nineveh, and say to the people, "The Lord has seen your terrible sins, You are doomed!" Instead Jonah ran from the Lord. He went to the seaport of Joppa and bought a ticket on a ship that was going to Spain. Then he got on the ship and sailed away to escape.
But the Lord made a strong wind blow, and such a storm came that the ship was about to be broken to peices. Jonah realized that this was the Lords punishment for his disobedience, and so he told the sailors to throw him overboard. They prayed for forgiveness, and then did as he had asked, and the sea calmed down. The Lord sent a big fish to swallow Jonah.
Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord, begging forgiveness, and the chance for redemption. The Lord commanded the fish to vomit up Jonah on the shore, and it did.
Jonah then went to Nineveh, and delivered the Lords message. The people there were so frightened that they fasted, wore sack clothes, and prayed. When God saw that the people had repented, he had mercy and did not destroy them, as he had planned.
