Jae looked out of his window, he was a sophomore in high school now, and he was totally bombing it. "Mom's gonna blow a head gasket if I don't get my grades up soon, then she'll ground me for a month."
He closed the comic book he was reading and brushed the dark hair at the front of his head to the side, to no avail, it fell right back into his eyes. "BAH!" He cried going to the mirror. His hair made him look like an old punk rocker; it was white blond except for the thick black hair that always fell down the side of his face. He thought about cutting it off but changed his mind.
As he tried to sleep, his thoughts turned to the girl he had seen in the streets that day. Her thick black-brown hair and blue-green eyes, the way she walked, and finally the pain he had felt when she laughed at him when he hit her in the head with his F test from math class a few days ago. He turned over; nothing was going his way anymore. His best friend Matt had a girlfriend, or was being chased by the nerdy girl from their class and all the girls he tried to ask out turned him down.
"Oh well Jae, tomorrow's another day." He thought as he drifted into dreamland.
His mind awoke in a cloudy place, in the twilight. He hovered over the ground and saw his real crush, Erin. She stood before him arms open and inviting. He rushed forward and she disappeared in a mist and he found himself gazing wildly about. Then a voice came from the mist that blocked his view.
"Tuxedo…" The words drifted through the air towards him. "You have to help them Tuxedo…You have to save her, you must save them Tuxedo…"
He shot straight up in bed. His alarm clock was blaring in his ear. "EIGHT O'CLOCK?" He cried leaping out of bed and into his uniform. He grabbed his books and hollered a thank you over his shoulder to his parents who had stuffed toast in his hands as well as the lunch sack.
He raced towards school, late as usual. He leaped through the door just as the tardy bell rang and slid into his seat as he knew the teacher would come in hollering at him for being late again. He looked around after pushing his bag under the desk. Most of his class was absent. The teacher walked, half asleep, into the classroom.
"Is anyone here today?"
The few members of his class that were
awake groaned and slumped over, falling into a deep sleep.
"Good, take out your books and use them as a pillow." The teacher said, falling to the floor.
"Mr. Yokorino?" He called as the man hit the floor. He dashed up and lifted his head from the concrete. He tried to call the office on the intercom and heard only sleeping noises, then a low voice said, "School has been canceled for today, everyone go home and get some rest."
He turned and saw everyone stumbling towards the door. He pulled aside Mark, who was awake at least and asked him, "What's wrong with everyone?"
"I think they all stayed up last night to watch that new teen dating show, Out of this World on cable. I wanted to watch, but my mom sent me to bed."
"I hadn't heard about it."
"Oh, it's all the rage, Mary got accepted and she's gonna be on tonight. My mom said I could watch it, you wanna come over, last night's rerun is on in a little while, since school's canceled and all…"
"Sure Mark, I'm gonna call home first."
"I'll wait outside, I want to see if I can talk to Mary before she leaves."
Jae heads to the phone in the office and takes it out of the hand of a sleeping secretary. "Mom, mom are you there."
"Hello Jae. School canceled? Your father's job got a holiday for the week, so we're going to the park and taking Rachel with us, do you want to come?"
"No, thanks mom, can I go to Mark's house?"
"Don't watch more than a half hour of television and be home by dinner time."
"Yes mother."
"See you after school son." She hung up the phone.
"After school? School was canceled. Something is really wrong here. I hope someone does something about it." He walked out to find Mark and Mary kissing in front of the building. "Would you cut it out guys?" He asks after coughing a little.
"Oh, hi Jae." Mary says, smiling through her thick glasses at him.
‘Gosh I'm glad that she gave up on me.’ "Hi Mary. Mark are you ready?"
"Actually, I'm sorry bud but I promised Mary I'd walk her home."
"Yeah right." He mumbled. "Alright then, I'll go for a bike ride instead."
Jae walked home sullenly, then an ambulance rushed past him on the near deserted street. "What? That's headed for the television studio." He tossed his book bag in the hedge and took off at a run for the studio. ‘It's a good thing I keep in shape.’ He thought. ‘Otherwise, I'd be sick to my stomach from the running I do. And I'm glad I don't usually klutz up when I…’ His feet tangled together and he took a dive for the pavement. His hands immediately shot out and he did a flip, landing back on his feet. He took off running again. ‘Major cool job klutz mister.’
"Did I really think that?"
"No, you didn't bleach head." A familiar medium deep voice said.
"Not you."
"Me."
