  • Charlie Brown and gang make their debut on 2 October, 1950. The daily comic strip was created by catroonist Charles Schulz. Charlie is the leader of the group which includes Lucy, Linus, Snoopy, Marcia and Peppermint Patty.

    After World War II, Korea was divided between the US and Russia at the 38th parallel. On 25 June, 1950 tensions were so high and North Korea invaded South Korea. The United Nations and US troops lead by Douglas MacArthur entered South Korea to help in the War and pushed the North Koreans almost into China. Once China got involved, by the end of the year, MacArthur and the troops were retreating. On 11 April 1951, President Truman fired MacArthur when MacArthur publicly criticized Truman's stragegy in Korea and refusing to declare war on China. MacArthur was replaced by General Matthew Ridgway.

    In 1950, a fire broke out in the Lincoln National Forest in New Mexico and animals were forced to run for their lives. To esacape the fire a little cub took refuge in a burned tree. He was hurt. After the fire, firrefighters found the bear cub clinging to the tree and was taken to safety. He had burned his paws and legs. The firefighters, ranger and warden all got together and named the bear Smokey. Since his home had been destroyed, he was flown across country to a new home in the National Zoo in Washington, DC. When kids went to visit him at the zoo they also learned about preventing forest fires. Thus, to help children learn more about forest fires, Smokey the Bear became our symbol on teaching to prevent forest fires.

    Baudouin was crowned king of Belguim on 16 July 1951 when his father abdicated. His father, Leopold III surrendered to Germany in 1940 which tore Belguim apart and he has been living in excile. Many of the people didn't forgive him for surrendering.

    On 26 July, 1952, Eva Peron died at the age of 33. She was born Eva Duarte, but was called Evita and was an actress when she met and married Juan Peron, who became president of Argentina in 1946. She was deeply involved with politics and loved by millions of poverty-stricken people whom she helped. She also helped with getting women the right to vote.

    In 1954 Dr. Jonas E. Salk, who discovered a vaccine for Polio, started his experimental trials of his vaccine on children. His success would one day rid the world of Polio.

    Walt Disney, creator of Micky Mouse and movie-producer, created a world that everyone, small or large will enjoy. On 18 July 1955, Disneyland in Anaheim, California, opened it's doors to visitors that will enjoy rides and walking through the park. It cost 17 million dollars to initally build Disneyland and plans for expansion are already in discussion.

    In Montgomery, Alabama on 1 March 1956 Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to sit in the back of a bus. She instead sat in the front of the bus, which was almost always empty. When arrested, this sparked demonstrations against segregation on city buses which is led by Martin Luther King.

    His name, Elvis Aaron Presley, and is taking the nation by storm with his style of music. Known as Elvis the Pelvis for his swinging hips and legs, he has combined the tradition of black blues music and country music with hard, fast rhythmic backing. Don't Be Cruel and Blue Suede Shoes are number one hits, and have sold more than 7 million copies.

    The Race to Space was won by the Soviets on 4 October 1957 when they launched the Sputnik I satellite into orbit around the earth. The Americans are almost ready to launch their own 3 1/4-pound satellite.

    On 21 December 1958, General Charles De Gaulle, who was Prime Minister of France, was elected the first President of the Fifth Republic of France. De Gaulle was the leader of the Free French revolution during World War II.

    Fidel Castro has overthrown Fulgencio Batista who fled the country of Cuba on 2 January 1959. The new President is to be Dt. Manuel Urrutia and Castro will be the commander in chief of the Cubian Armed Forces.

    Mrs. Ruth Handler enjoyed watching her daughter Barbara play with dolls and roll playing. She decided that all girls should have that opportunity and launched the first Barbie in February 1959. Barbie made her first appearance at the American Toy Fair in New York. Ruth and her husband Elliot founded Mattel Toys.
