Naval Officer | Neil Armstrong was born to Stephen and Viola Armstrong on 5 August 1930. Growing up he has a fascination with airplanes, and at the age of 16 he had earned is pilot's License. He attended Purdue University in 1947 with a Navy scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering. He was called to active duty with the Navy and won his pilot's wings a Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida. At 20, he was the youngest pilot in his squadron in Korea where he flew 78 combat missions. He also earned his Master's degree in Areospace Engineering from the University of Southern California. |
Astronaut | In 1962 Neil was the first civilian selected to the Astronaut corp. In 1966 his first mission into space was to dock his spacecraft with another. Although the docking was a success, they ran into problems, and spacecraft went of of control. Neil Armstrong had to manually bring the spacecraft down safely. |
Apollo 11 Crew | In 1969 Neil Armstrong was named the commander of the first lunar landing mission on Apollo 11 to the moon with crewmates, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. (Buzz) and Michael Collins. On 20 July 1969, a historical event took place when Neil and Buzz landing on the moon. The world cheered when Neil said, "The Eagle has Landed". |

Neil Armstrong | Neil Armstrong resigned from the Astronaut program in 1970. He became a Professor at the University of Cincinnati, teaching Aerospace Engineering until 1979. In 1986 he was named Vice Chairman of the Presidential commission investigation the breakup of the space shuttle Challenger. In 1991 he was inducted into the Areospace Walk of Honor.
