John Glenn

John Glenn joined the Marines in 1943. He fought in WWII as a fighter pilot, flying 59 mission. He also flew in the Korean War, flying 90 missions and shooting down 3 enemy planes. John Glenn also set the first supersonic transcontinental flight from LA to New York. This took 3 hours and 23 minutes. He earned the Distingushed Flying Cross 5 times and 19 Air Medals.

On April 9, 1959 he became one of the seven astronauts seleced for the Mercury Program. Glenn was also the oldest of the seven. On February 20, 1962 he was the first man to orbit the earth in Friendship 7. He orbited the earth three times and it took less than 5 hours.

He became a Senator for Ohio in 1974.In the 105th Congress, Senator John Glenn was the Ranking Member of both the Governmental Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Airland Forces in the Senate Armed Services Committee. He also serves on the Select Committee on Intelligence and the Special Committee on Aging. He is considered one of the Senate's leading experts on technical and scientific matters, and is widely respected for his work to prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction. He has used his position on the Governmental Affairs Committee to root out waste in government and to clean up the nation's nuclear materials production plants.

John Glenn returned to space on October 29, 1998 where experiments were conducted on the loss of muscle, protein and bone density, sleep disruptions and a general loss of balance were all carried out on this mission. Special attention was paid to Discovery's oldest astronaut, 77-year-old John Glenn. With dozens of needles and high-tech tissue scans, scientists hope the effects of microgravity on the Discovery crew will lead to new insights into how to make aging a more gentle process for the rest of us.

John married Annie in 1949 and had two children, John David and Carolyn Ann. Annie shared her husband with the world. She is now ready to for the world to give him back to her. God's Speed to them both, we wish them love and happiness and peace in their retirement.
