Mother Theresa
An original poem by one of our visitors.
OUR FEMININE LEGACY
by Judyful Cook
On August 26th in the year 1910
Was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu's origin.
Born not in exotic Transylvania
But in the town of Skopje, Albania.
She was the youngest child of three
In a very comfortable family.
When her father died very young,
Into hardship, she was flung.
The unwavering faith of her mother
Was unlike that of any other.
Her mom sold cloth and embroidery
While Agnes joined the parish Sodality.
Interested in a missionary's life,
She was willing to go through strife.
This dedicated, compassionate soul
Eagerly embarked on her earthly goal.
At 18, her life grew much broader
When she became a nun in an Irish order.
She willingly left her comfortable homeland
To allow her spiritual growth to expand.
Teaching geography in Calcutta in 1929
She caught TB and her health did decline.
Sent to Darjeeling to recover and rest,
She would soon discover another quest.
In 1946 she received God's urgent call
To leave the convent's sheltered wall
And serve Him in the "poorest of the poor"
Feeding the hungry and tending each sore.
In 1950, the whole world, she astounded,
When the Missionaries of Charity was founded.
And, of course, I might also add, by then,
She had become an Indian citizen.
She called herself "A pencil in God's hands".
Now, on earth, her name forever stands.
"I'm only a little wire-God is the power"
Stated the namesake of Jesus' Little Flower.
By her deeds and maternal expression
She has imparted a lasting impression.
Towards faith, will and wisdom she strived,
Loving, serving, respecting the poor and deprived.
Awarded the Pope John 23 Peace Prize in 1971,
By 1979, the Nobel Peace Prize she deservedly won.
Working and praying daily while tired and weary,
She never perceived herself as extraordinary.
No matter what fury nature unleashed,
This holy woman practiced what she preached.
With spiritual strength, leadership and guidance,
This remarkable person made a difference.
By 1990, while she was growing old,
Her life was more precious than gold.
Through goodness and despite satan's wrath,
She always claimed to tread a simple path.
It's hard to imagine that, by 1994,
She and others were caring for the poor.
She asked for no glory, nor any mention.
Serving the poor was her only intention.
T'was a sad day for all in 1997
When God called her to join Him in Heaven.
Who could this woman possibly be?
Why, Mother Theresa, our feminine legacy!*
