Bull Roarer
A neat noise maker for your New Year's Eve party. By experimenting
with the position and number of holes, it is possible to make some really
weird and scary noises - you might make this project for Halloween.
Materials:
A round plastic lid saved from a throwaway food container
(the plastic should be soft and the lid about 3 inches in diameter)
About 36 inches of strong, thin cord
A couple of pieces of thin colored paper for each side of the lid
A pack of colored felt tip pens
A pair of scissors
A roll of double sided sticky tape
A paper or leather hole punch
1. Set the lid on the colored paper and cut out two disks.
If the lid has a raised lip or edge, trim the paper disks back until they
are a smooth, flat fit.
2. Remove the paper disks and, using the felt tip markers, draw
and color any geometric design that you like. You can have dots,
squares, spirals, flowers or any thing else you like.
3. Use tabs of double-sided sticky tape to fix the decorated paper
disks one on each side of the plastic lid.
4. With the paper disks in place, take the paper/leather punch
and work the various holes that go to make up the design. Be sure
the two string holes are set 1/4 inch apart and are either side of the
center, and the noise making holes are set at intervals around the rim.
5. Pass the 36 inches of strong cord through the two central holes
so as to make a continuous loop and tie off.
To use, the loop is held taut between your two index fingers and the disk
is swung over and over about thirty times. The cord is pulled out,
and finally, the cord is pulled in and out causing the disk to spin and
roar.
