Dishwasher Magnet

Dishwasher Magnet

Materials
Lightweight box cardboard (like from a cereal box)
piece of sticky-backed magnet
paper fastener
scissors
masking tape
pen
pretty fabric scrap
jar lid or drinking glass, about 3 1/2 inches (9 centimeters) in diameter

Instruction 1 graphic1.  Trace two identical circles on the cardboard using the glass or jar lid as a pattern.  Cut one circle out.  Cut around the other circle about 1/2 inch (1.25 centimeters) away from the edge of the tracing line.

Instruction 2 graphic2.  Turn the larger circle over so that the outline of the circle is face down.  Cover the back with glue and a pretty piece of fabric and let it dry.  When it is dry, turn the cardboard over again and cut out the traced circle.

Instruction 3 graphic3.  Set the fabric-covered circle on top of the cardboard circle so that the edges exactly match. Poke a hole in the middle of the circles and hold them together with a paper fastener.

Instruction 4 graphic4.  Take the two circles apart.  Cut a piece out of the fabric-covered circle above the hole for the paper fastener that will be big enough to show the words "clean" and "dirty" on the back circle.  Put the two circles back together with the paper fastener and write "clean" on the part of the back circle that shows.  Turn the back circle so that the word "clean" is hidden behind the fabric.  Now write the word "dirty" on the part of the back circle that shows.  Attach a piece of sticky-backed magnet to the back circle.

This magnet can be left on the front of the dishwasher.  If the dishwasher is not yet full enough to wash the dishes inside, turn the magnet to "dirty."  If the dishes inside are washed and ready to be unloaded, turn the magnet to "clean".  A clever gift for mother to help avoid confusion over clean and dirty dished.
