Hanukkah Menorah

Menora

Materials:

Clay of your choice
9 small candles
Paint or glaze

Make a menorah to celebrate Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights.  In December, Jewish children light a candle every day for 8 days.  The candles are placed in a special holder called a menorah.  Your menorah can be made in any shape you like.

It must hold 9 candles - 1 for each day of the holiday, and 1 for the candle used for lighting the other candles, called a shammes or leader.

Shape the clay as you like, flattening the base so it will stand solidly.  Insert the candles (birthday candles or special Hanukkah candles) into the clay, pressing an opening a bit larger than the candle.  Clays shrink as they dry so be sure to leave space or the candles won't fit.  When dry either bake or fire, depending upon your clay type.  Then paint or glaze to finish.

Every night of Hanukkah add a candle to the menorah.
