Necktie Pencil Can
From: "Gifts To Make For Your Favorite Grownup" by Kathy Ross
Materials:
gold trim
rubber band
scissors
12-ounce (375-milliliter) cardboard frozen juice can (If the juice can
you are using is plastic instead of cardboard, cover it with masking tape
to create a surface that the glue will stick to)
eight old neckties (ask your family and friends to help you collect
old neckties)
flared drinking glass that fits part way into the juice can
white glue or blue glue gel
1.
Choose eight neckties in a combination of patterns that you think look
good together. Measuring from the point of the thin end of one tie,
cut a piece 6 inches (15 centimeters) long. Do the same with each
tie.
2.
Cover the can with white glue or blue glue gel. The glue gel is thicker
than white glue so it is easier to use with fabric. Glue the tie
pieces, with their points up, around the juice can to cover it. Rub
glue around the inside edge of the can and fold all the points of the ties
into the can. Put a drinking glass part way down into the can to
hold the points in place until the glue dries. Put a rubber band
around the bottom of the can to hold the ties in place while the glue is
drying. When the glue has dried, remove the glass and the rubber
band.
3.
Cut a piece of gold trim to fit around the bottom of the can and glue it
in place. Be sure to save the other ends of the cut neckties for
other projects.
