The next stage from basic printing is to start using 'stencils'. A stencil is simply a piece of paper with a picture or pattern cut out of it. Now we're going to make a stencil and try some printing from it. | |||||
You will need: |

Here's
what to do:
1. Make a stencil by cutting a pattern from your piece of heavy paper (or light card). The best way to do this is to fold the paper in half and cut some shapes out ALONG THE FOLD. 2. Now unfold the stencil and lay it on top of a piece of photocopy paper. Put some paint on your piece of heavy card, now using your brush lightly paint over the stencil (just with a very light coat of paint) so the pattern is covered. Very carefully lift the stencil off and let your print dry. 3. You can combine colours, try printing onto coloured or textured paper, or even try using crayons or pastels with your stencil, do you get the same result? |

Here's a print I made from a stencil. I used two colours, red and blue. I painted the red after the blue had dried but I moved the stencil a little so some blue was left showing through. |
