News from your child’s classroom for the month of September 2001

Here is what is happening this month.

Reading – We have been reading memoirs – stories that focus on special people, places or things. We have also been reading some personal narratives – stories that focus on one event and enable the reader to feel what the author felt. This week I am introducing Reading Workshop to the children. This will allow me to challenge students on their reading levels and allow them some choice in their reading material. Students will have a “reading buddy” with whom they will work in choosing books and reading those books in class.

Spelling/Vocabulary – Your child may have a spelling test or a vocabulary test (or a combination of both) each week. The students will be asked to write a note in their assignment notebooks if we will not have spelling words.

Writing – We are really working on filling our Writer’s Notebooks with all kinds of good things to write about! We also made “traveling” writer’s notebooks to write in outside of school. Please ask your child about theirs. We had our first writing celebration during August where everyone shared a piece they wrote last school year. It was fantastic! I am anxious to plan another celebration. It’s great for the children to share and hear each other’s voices.

Math – Our students are split up for math, but our team of teachers is focusing on number computation, place value, and addition and subtraction. Please work with your children to help them memorize basic math facts so they can recall them rapidly. Knowledge of addition and subtraction facts is essential to understanding multiplication and division. Those students who have studied multiplication facts should make sure they have the facts memorized!

Social Studies - We just finished a great unit on geography and map skills.

Science – On Monday we began a unit on “Properties of Objects and Materials.” The students will be given vocabulary words to study as well as a study guide before the test, which will not take place for a couple of weeks.

Assignment Notebooks – Please make sure you are looking at their homework assignments on a nightly basis. Thank you!!

Respect Assembly – This month our class, along with 4 other 3-4 classes, will be presenting an assembly on “respect” to the school. You are more than welcome to attend this assembly. When I know more information, I will let you know.

Wish List – We are still accepting donations of treats for the prize box as well as colored Xerox paper.

Volunteers – If you signed up to volunteer (thank you, thank you!), please look for a volunteer survey in the Take Home Tuesday envelopes.
