Hongi - Explanation
The Hongi is the traditional act of two people pressing noses together as a form of welcome.
It is performed principally on the marae after the welcoming ceremony and signifies that the visitor is now accepted as a member of the local group. While more commonly performed by men, women being received often with a kiss, it is also acceptable for women to receive it as well.
The ceremony recalls the time when Rangi the Sky God and Papatuanuku the Earth Mother were joined and there was no light in the world.
