Game #1 - Donut Eating Contest

You will need one dozen donuts with a hole in the centre. Tie each donut with a long string. Tie each of the donuts to a long stick, so that the donuts dangle down. You may want to put 6 donuts on one stick and 6 on a separate stick. (one for the boys and one for the girls.) Choose 6 girls and 6 boys. Have the players kneel on the floor, facing the audience. Choose 2 helpers for each team to hold up the stick. The team to have everyone eat the entire donut is the winner. Their hands MUST be behind their backs. Play upbeat, energetic music as the game is played. The music starts on "Go" and stops when one team wins. Encourage the audience to cheer loudly for their team. This is a good time to give out incentives.
Bible Story - The Basketball Tryouts

This is not necessarily a "bible story" or a modern day version of one. Instead, today's story teaches a basic Bible truth; living the way God wants you to, even when no one is looking. The message is to live the way God wants you to, because you want to, and because you know it is good for you, instead of doing it just because you were told to! This story is about doing what you are asked, even while the person who asked you to do it is not around!

Once there were two guys trying out for the basketball team.
The coach said: "In order to make this team, you have to be able to play basket ball. In order to play basketball, you have to do 3 things:

  1. Eat healthy foods, so you have energy to play.
  2. Exercise, so you make your muscles strong to run and jump.
  3. Get lots of sleep, so you are not too tired to play.

So the 2 guys went home that night, thinking about what the coach said. The next practice wasn't until next week.

The first guy was good, and did what the coach said. -He ate carrots, and apples, and drank orange juice. -Every morning when he got up, he went jogging, did sit ups, & push ups -He made sure that he went to bed by 10:00, so he wouldn't be too tired.

The second guy thought, the coach doesn't live with me, he can't see what I do everyday! I'll just do those things next week, at the practice. So instead of being good, and doing what the coach said:
-He ate chips, and cookies and drank pop
-All day long, he sat on the couch watching TV
-He stayed up until 5:00 in the morning, watching Movies.

One week later, it was time for the basket ball try outs.

The coach said: Everyone run around the gym 5 times to warm up. -The two guys started running. The first guy was running fast. -The second guy started to run, but pretty soon, he got slower, and slower, and slower.

Then the coach said: Everyone do a lay up, and see who can reach the rim. -The first guy ran, and jumped for the hoop. He could jump really high. -The second guy started to run, but when he tried to jump, he could only jump a little bit, because his muscles were not strong enough to make him jump high.

The practice went on for a while, doing drills, and shooting at the hoop. After 1 hour, the first guy was starting to have a lot of fun. The second guy, was sweating so much, and was so tired, that he had to go sit on the bench.

Soon the coach called the guys together to pick the team. He saw that the second guy seemed to be having some trouble. The coach asked, "What kinds of foods did you eat this week?"
(chips, cookies, and pop)
"Did you get lots of exercise like I asked?"
(well, I did push ups with my thumb on the remote control)
"Did you get lots of sleep?"
( I thought 3 hours a night was lots)

The first guy was the one that made the team.

Why? (ask kids)
It is important to do good things when people are watching and when they are not.
Explanation of Story

Take a few minutes to explain that it is important to do what you are asked, even if no one is looking. God wants you to live a certain way because it is good for you! It will help you stay out of a lot of trouble! We need to listen to His rules (found in the Bible) and obey them. If we do that, we will have a great friendship with Him, and will be able to live with Him someday forever!
Game #2 - Pass the Donut

You will need one donut with a hole in the middle for each team. You will also need plastic drinking straws, one for each player. Choose 5 boys and 5 girls. Each player must put the straw in their mouth. On "Go", the first person puts the donut on their straw. From now on, no one is allowed to use their hands. The first person must pass the donut to the second person's straw that is in their mouth. Once the donut is successfully passed, the second person must pass the donut to the third person's straw. Continue until the last person has the donut on their straw. The first team to pass the donut to all their players wins! If the donut falls off, the donut goes to the person who is passing the donut to the next person. They must try again to pass it without it falling off. Play upbeat, energetic music as the game is played. The music starts on "Go" and stops when someone wins. Encourage the audience to cheer loudly for their team. This is a good time to give out incentives.
Object Lesson & Salvation Message -

You will need a Donut and a Donut Hole (Timbit). This illustration is taken from "The Donut Man". Life without Jesus is like a donut. There's a hole in the middle of your heart. Without Jesus, something is missing from your life. There is only one thing that can fit into that hole. (put the timbit into the donut hole) It fits perfectly! Jesus is the only thing that can fill the empty lonely space in your life! You can have Jesus be your friend by asking him! (Lead the kids in a repeat after me prayer.)
Memory Verse

If anyone loves God, he will obey His teaching. John 14:23

Put each word on a piece of paper that is cut out in the shape of a basketball. Tape each word to a sponge. Set up the sponges on a table with the words taped on. Have the kids say the verse together several times. Choose a volunteer. Give them a soft foam ball. Let him or her have 2 chances to knock down a word or two. After their turn is over, say the verse together. Choose another volunteer. Continue this process until the words have been knocked off the table.
