Game #1 - Wheel Barrell Race
Choose10 kids for each team. Have those 10 kids get into partners. One person is the wheel barrel, and the other person is the driver. The wheel barrel person gets into a "push up" position. Their partner grabs their legs, and hold them at waist height. Then the two of them go to the finish line and back, and then tag the next pair. The first team to be sitting in a straight line after all the pairs have had a turn wins! Play upbeat, energetic music while the game is being played. The music starts on "Go" and stops when someone wins. Encourage kids to cheer loudly for their team. This is a good time to hand out incentives!
Big Head Story
The bell rang, and all the kids ran to the lunch room to start eating their lunch. They were excited to get there because they always had fun laughing and talking with their friends.
Stacey was sitting at her regular table. She was eating a peanut butter sandwich. Over at the next table was a girl named Nancy. She was very annoying. Most of the time during lunch, she went around to different people and made fun of them, or laughed at what they were eating. Today was no different. For some reason she decided she was going to bother Stacey today. She walked up to her and said, "Nice hair!" The only thing was, she was saying it as a tease, not a nice compliment. Then a few minutes later she came back and told everyone at the table not to be Stacey's friend because she was a "churchy girl". Church was for sissies. Well, as the lunch time went on, Stacey was getting more and more angry at Nancy. In Kids Club, Stacey had learned that when people tease you, you should just ignore them. If they keep teasing you, you should walk away, or tell an adult or teacher. Nancy kept on bothering Stacey. Finally Stacey couldn't take it any longer! She was going to go punch Nancy really hard! She was really going to get it this time! Stacey got up out of her seat.
Then Stacey thought about something. She remembered what she had done yesterday at kids club. She had asked Jesus to be her best friend. She thought would Jesus punch someone? Would Jesus be happy with her if she punched someone? Is that what trying to do good things was all about? Stacey wanted to do what Jesus wanted her to do, even more than what she wanted to do. Jesus was the most important. Even more important than what she felt like doing. So, Stacey went back to her seat. The next time Nancy came over to tease, Stacey just got up out of her seat, and went and told the lunch room teacher. She explained that she really wanted to punch Nancy, but she knew that was not the right thing to do. It was more important to do what was right, than to do what she felt like doing.
Salvation Message
Expain to the kids that being a "Christian", or being Jesus's best friend is something that changes how you are. Once you ask Jesus to be your best friend, you don't have to keep asking him. We just do it a lot at kids club to make sure that everyone has a chance to hear about Jesus, and ask Him to be their friend. Once you ask Jesus to be your best friend, you need to do a few things. You need to talk to Jesus every day, and tell him how much you love Him! Tell him good stuff, and bad stuff. Reading your bible is important too. It will help you learn about Jesus, and what he was like. It will also help you understand what things are good, and what things are bad. Also, you need to change the way you live. Now, you need to do what God wants you to do. It has to be more important than what you want to do. (Give the kids a chance to respond by leading them in a repeat after me prayer.)
Memory Verse
You are God's child. Run from evil and try your best to do good. 1 Timothy 6:11 (This is a paraphrase)
Put each word on a seperate piece of paper. Make enough for 2 sets of the memory verse. Choose 5 kids from each side. Give them 60 seconds, or whoever gets it first, to put the verse in order. Have the whole group read the verse together a few times. After they have a turn, choose 5 new kids. Scramble the words again, and give them another 60 seconds to put the verse in order. Then say the verse together a few more times.
Game #2 - Connect Four
You will need to make lines on a wall to make a grid. I cut many strips of paper on a chopper that were about 2 inches thick. Then I stapled them end to end. I used ordinary 8.5 X 11 paper, and cut it the longest way. Then I stapled about 12 - 15 together, to make one line. Our game board had 5 lines across, and 5 lines going the other way, but you could make it as big as you like. Cut out circles from 2 different colors of paper, about the size of a dinner plate.
A Chance to place a game piece is earned by answering a question right. Choose one person from the team, and ask them a question. If they get it correct, then the entire team can yell out suggestions on where to place the circle. The team is trying to get 4 circles of their team's color in a row. The opposite team is not only trying to get 4 in a row, but also to block the first team from getting four in a row too. Prepare a list of questions before hand. Include questions from the story, from the memory verse, from the rules, and any other relevant questions. Try to reinforce the concept of "living a Christian life". I found it difficult to explain the concept. It's more than just "being good". It is having a relationship with Jesus. It's more than just praying to God everyday and reading your Bible, it's also about changing your heart, and changing the way act, so that others will know that Jesus is most important to you. Maybe these concepts would make some good True or False questions. Have fun!
