The Wings of Honneamise |
8 part series from the 80's. The story takes place in a Tokyo of the future where Boomers and humans are supposed to coexist peacefully. Unfortunately, the Boomers (androids) sometimes malfunction and wreak havoc on the city. It is up to the Knight Sabers to save the day!
A 1990's remake of the old 80's classic Bubblegum Crisis. It is 26 episodes long and made for TV rather than as an OVA. The year is now 2040 and the character and mecha designs have been changed to a more current look. Character personalities have also been changed and voice actors are different. Other minor characters have disappeared and been replaced. However, the idea is still the same - 4 young women in awesome armor fighting defective boomers and the corrupt corporation of Genom.
A series about a young girl/robot and her quest to find the love of 30,000 people. I'm afraid I'm still confused on the storyline of this one, but Key (short for Tokiko) is a young girl who gets caught up in the music idol business in her quest.
I haven't yet decided whether she is human or robot - for she seems to act like a robot - she is emotionless and has neat powers. However, it could be that her grandfather who "created" her simply desired her to think this way... To make things more complicated, the company that sponsored her grandfather also created other robots, ones that decide to go berserk in public. Action packed and with a mysterious story, Key's search for love and friendship will touch everyone.
Created by Studio Ghibli and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Kiki's Delivery Service is about a young witch who has left for another town to make a life for herself. Accompanied by her cat Jiji, she sets up a delivery service using her skill of flying on her broom. With her kind heart, Kiki makes new friends and overcomes many obstacles, learning to be independent.
6 part OVA about a group of kids who have been reincarnated. Previously, they were alien scientists who lived on the moon. Having caught a deadly disease, they die and are reborn on earth together. They meet again as high school students - except for Rin who is a 9 year old. They discover they share "moon dreams" of the previous lives. Alice learns she an talk to plants, and several of the others discover powers like ESP.
The music is gorgeous and the story is engrossing. It may take a few times watching it through to keep characters and their lives straight, but it is well worth it!
Manga drawn by Rumiko Takahashi, Ranma spans 6 or 7 seasons, over 100 episodes and several OAVs and movies. It is the tale of Saotome Ranma, who was training at the ground of the cursed springs. He fell into one of these springs - the spring of the drowned girl. Whenever he is splashed with cold water, he turns into a girl, and whenever he is splashed with hot water, he turns back. A fun comedy with lots of action:) Ranma is engaged to Akane through an agreement of the fathers. At first, they hate the idea and they are often seen arguing throughout the series. In addition, all sorts of other characters are out to get Akane and Ranma(in both his guy and girl forms;)). Also, several other characters have fallen into cursed springs (drowned panda, drowned duck, drowned cat...). Join Ranma, Akane, Shampoo, Mousse, Ryouga and others for lots of fun and laughs!
Created by Gainax, who later went on to release the popular Evangelion, this film takes place in an alternate reality threateningly like our own. Shirotsugu had wanted to join the air force, but ends up joining the Royal Space Force. It seems the Space Force is simply a joke group made by the government - they don't except anyone to actually reach space. However, a group of old scientists help him create the technology needed to reach space and in the face of assassins, an uninterested government and war with another country, Shirotsugu makes space flight a reality.
Stunning animation, and with believeable characters and plot, The Wings of Honneamise is a wonderful movie. While some complain the story is too slow, the leisurely pace of things gives it a natural feel and makes the already detailed world seem even more real.
Several spin-offs have been created - AD Police, Bubblegum Crash, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. Crash is supposed to be bad, I haven't heard anything about AD Police, and as for 2040, continue reading!

The movie is essentially a retelling of the OVA in 90 minutes, with narration by Alice as she looks back on events and a small bit that shows us Alice and Rin together in the future.
