Hey Diddle Diddle

Hey diddle, diddle
The Cat and the fiddle
The Cow jumped over the Moon.
The Little Dog laughed
To see such sport
And the Dish ran away with the Spoon.
Legend has it the the "Cat" referred to in this rhyme was Queen Elizabeth I, who often played with her courtiers like a "cat with a mouse". The Queen was known to enjoy music and dancing.

The "Little Dog" was Lord Robert Dudley, one of the Queen's favorites at court.

The "Dish" and the "Spoon" were also members of the court. "The Dish" was a nickname given to the Earl of Hertford. His position in court was to guard the golden dishes.

"The Spoon" was the Queen's taster, Lady Katherine Grey.

The "Dish" and the "Spoon" married without the Queen's permission and were imprisioned in the Tower of London for disobedience. They spent seven years and had two children while imprisoned in the Tower.
