Peter Benchley's Amazon premiered in syndication the week of September 20, 1999. The series is about six survivors of a commercial jet crash, abandoned by the search and rescue crew in a remote area of the Amazon Rain Forest, who are pitted against one of the most hostile and dangerous environments in earth. Encountering a mysterious legendary white tribe, a "Ghost" tribe descended from 17th century explorers, and threatened by natives, swarms of poisonous insects, venomous snakes, armies of soldier ants, piranha, and big hungry wild cats, they push themselves to extremes in their attempts to escape - or survive.

Due to a merger between CBS and King World, Peter Benchley's Amazon has been cut from the programming for next season. The decision had nothing to do with its ratings. It was simply that King World doesn't carry that kind of show. They are mainly concerned with Talk Shows and Game Shows.

Alliance Atlantis, creators of Peter Benchley's Amazon, have not given up yet, but we need to act now, and we need to act fast!

Contact Alliance Atlantis and give them your support. Let then know how much you want Amazon on the fall schedule. Write CBS and King World and let them know they made a mistake (Be nice!) and ask them to reconsider. We need to let them know we're out here!

You can also write your local affiliate and thank them for airing Amazon. Even in this day and age, the pen is still mightier!

I stumbled across this bizarre show about a bunch of modern people who have that fish out of water look about them who are living with this tribe of people literally stuck in the middle ages who talk with a lot of prith thee and says thee. And, we can't forget the native tribe, complete with a Shaman with feathers, paint and his arrangement of dances to protect and cure them. I wondered just what in the world I had found, when the commercial break answered that question for me: it was Peter Benchley's Amazon and I was hooked.

Well, this called for some more investigation, so I hooked up to the trusty web and found the official home page to see what I could glean about this show.

It turns out, it premiered back in September 1999 and it's in syndication, so you never quite know when or where it will show up from town to town, just check your local listings. It's about a band of plane crash survivors in the middle of the remote part of the Amazon who were initially captured by the Spider tribe (those are the natives) but rescued by the Chosen (our prithee fellows) led by of all people, Baron Munchausen’s/The Well Manicured Man. (John Neville )

The look of the show has such a surreal quality to it. The actual villages look to me to be nothing more than sound stages set up with every tropical plant the local florist had on hand, time passes yet everyone still looks the same, and what's up with Falconer John (Gabriel Hogan) stripping down to his breeches and painting black triangles on himself every time he goes off into the jungle? (Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining in the least~*)

Even though I feel like I'm watching a hybrid between Land of the Lost and Gilligan's Island,(complete with a diva who has a different outfit for every occasion) I love this show to death. For all its faults, it has equal amount of amazing and intellectually stimulating stuff. Each show sticks with a variable of the classic storytelling elements of man against man and/or man against nature. You can actually form a bond of sorts with these characters and you anxiously wait for the next installment just to see what happens to them next.

Watch the show. I can't stress it strongly enough. If nothing else, catch it because Margo Kidder of Superman fame is going to make a three episode appearance as a cannibal queen. Now that's quality entertainment.

The Survivors:

Dr. Alex Kennedy (C. Thomas Howell)

a hot-shot heart surgeon with a fierce ego and an even stronger desire to escape back to civilization following the devastating plane crash that leaves a handful of survivors marooned in the jungle.

Karen Oldham (Carol Alt)

a flight attendant who thinks she's seen it all - until she survives a plane crash, which plunges her into the dangerous depths of the jungle.

Jimmy Stack (Chris Martin)

an auto mechanic whose life is drastically changed - in more ways than one - by winning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Rio de Janeiro on a game show. When the plane he's aboard crashes in the Amazon rainforest and all connection to his former life is stripped away, Jimmy finds the will to survive through his most precious possession: his sense of humor.

Pia Claire (Fabiana Udenio)

a pampered, young, jet-setting opera diva faced with the harsh realties of life after a devastating plane crash abandons her and a handful of other survivors in the midst of the jungle

Andrew Talbott (Rob Stewart)

a teacher who finds the challenge to survive in the Amazon following a devastating plane crash as intense as the terminal illness that first motivated him to venture on this fateful trip

Will Bauer (Tyler Hynes)

a teenager who survives a plane crash, loses his parents, gets abducted by natives, goes on a vision quest in the jungle and comes face-to-face with danger practically every day

PETER BENCHLEY'S AMAZON'S initial order of 22 hour-long episodes follow the adventures of the disparate group as they fight for survival in the Amazon wilderness.

Joining the humans are live animals, insects and reptiles indigenous to the Amazon. Animal Wrangler Michael Kurt Hackenberger is training a young jaguar and supplying "wild" boars, monkeys, parrots and llamas to the series. Bug Wrangler, Jim Lovisek, is supplying the series with a variety of creepy crawlers including the largest spider in the world, measuring 12-inches across, a foot-long centipede, and the biggest snake in the world, the anaconda as well as a leaf-cutter ant colony, among other authentic creatures such as piranhas.

this page is dedicated to the casts, crews, assorted support workers and production teams that worked long hours to bring us this show. Only a few got the big bucks but everybody had to be at the set on time and work the long hours. Their work was appreciated and the show is very much missed~*
