FROM Elizabeth:

For all of you out there that have been asking the home school questions, have any of you looked into Saxon Math. I have fallen in love with it and would probably kick and scream if I had to use any other. They have a great math program that starts with "K" and goes through 12th. The math has constant repetition from day one so the kids are going over what they learn from the beginning. This way they don't have a hard time forgetting what they learned last month or last week. If you want information on this call 1800-284-7019or go to their home page at:

FROM Donna:

How to Save Money - Here is a good page to teach all age kids to learn how to save money. There are 3 pages. Don't miss the worksheets. I am doing a week on money for Ryan.

Math - To help all students systematically learn their times tables, teach the facts in this way:

The Abacus - The abacus is a calculator whose earliest known use is circa 500 B.C. by the Chinese civilization. Addition, subtraction, division and multiplication can be performed on a standard abacus.

The KnotPlot Site - Here you will find a collection of knots and links, viewed from a partially mathematical perspective. The images were created with KnotPlot, a fairly elaboratae program to visualize and manipulate mathematical knots in three and four dimensions. (K-5)

grades 9-12 - Geometry and the Imagination - This document consists of a collection of handouts from a two-week summer workshop entitled 'Geometry and the Imagination'. This site provides the outline of this course taught at Princeton University over the summer of 1991. The course aims to convey the richness, diversity, connectedness, depth, and pleasure of mathematics. Geometry is approached in a broad sense, as used by mathematicians, to include such fields as topology and differential geometry, as well as classical geometry. Imagination, an essential part of mathematics, means not only the facility which is imaginative, but also the facility which calls to mind and manipulates mental images. One aim of the course is to develop the imagination. Many of the "handouts" that are provided here outline projects where art is used to expand one's "mathematical imagination". The lesson on How to Knit a Möbius Band is especially useful when integrating math and visual arts.

Geometry Through Art: What Children Can Learn about Art and Geometry - Here you will find a wonderful assortment of lesson ideas, facilitation suggestions, lists of materials needed, and handouts for you to photocopy. Veteran teacher Norman Shapiro focuses on the student as investigator, learning through doing, and using perception to stimulate the motivation for more developed concepts and language. Art is one of the intrinsically interesting applications of geometry and these pages point to a wonderful way into this topic for children and adults alike.
