If you are looking for a good biology text, you might want to check out the site for Sylvia Mader. She has written several biology texts and has web-sites that offer what she calls "chapter tools" -- outlines, study questions, and related web sites. The URL for the 5th Edition of her textbook is: Biology. Her home page is: Sylvia Mader Home Page.

There is an on-line biology book at: There is an on-line biology book at: http://gened.emc.maricopa.edu/bio/bio181/BIOBK/BioBookTOC.html">BioBook Table of Contents

There is another on-line biology book (sponsored by MIT) at: Biology Book - This is not a full textbook per se. It is designed to complement their biology course, but is has great info.

Five Senses - My son and I had a lot of fun here (Its not necessarily christian).

FROM Jane:

Something we did recently that was a lot of fun for a 4 yr old boy... Take several clear glasses - fill halfway with water. Put in drops of food coloring - mix colors. Also, talk about dissolving and what it means. Let him put a spoonful of things in a glass of water, stir, and see what happens. We just used things I saw in the kitchen, sugar, salt, pepper, flour, rice, etc... A year or 2 ago we took a big container of water and dropped things in it to see what floated and what didn't. He still remembers that and begs to do it again. We used kitchen items, toys, whatever I could find.

Critical thinking lesson plans for grades 1-3 - This is a good one to look at because it really explains how to use critical thinking. I took a quarter course on this many years ago. We see the phrase critical thinking on our plans but do we really know what it means?

Environmental Curriculum Plans - This curriculum plan comes from Earth Generation's New York Educator's Guide, a print publication with 10 complete curriculum plans for junior high students investigating environmental issues relevant to the Great Lakes region. Birds...I live in Ga. and still found many good ideas to use.

Cave Connection - For the next several weeks the 6th grade class will be in the "Cave Connection". Students will be experiencing a thematic approach to all their subjects during this period. Reading, social studies, language and math will all have a theme encompassing the earth's crust. Mold Fossils with Chocolate

Children's Butterfly Site - Despite their small size, butterflies and moths are some of the World's most wondrous animals. Their beauty, seemingly miraculous metamorphosis, and apparently carefree flight all spark our imaginations. In this brief space, we provide... A coloring page that shows the life cycle of the Monarch. Some answers to frequently asked questions about butterflies and moths. With the Butterfly and Moth Life Cycle.

Glacier National Park - Imagine a class field trip with your students to the crown jewel of the Rockies without leaving the classroom. Get on board one of Glacier National Park's original buses and motivate your students to learn by online discovery and inquiry. The Glacier Park EFT will take you there! of interdisciplinary lessons involving science, social studies, language arts and mathematics (the pre-field trip lesson plans are included in each link below). The EFT will begin with a General Tour and highlight the following aspects of Glacier Park: Ecosystems, Botany, Geology, Glaciers/Weather, Aquatics, Wildlife

River Resource - RiverResource is a place where students of rivers can explore valuable river resources--a gateway to productive internet exploration. At RiverResource you won't find the facts, but rather the connections to facts, books, and people studying rivers. Here classrooms can share the information they are gathering about rivers.

Plant Kingdom - This little spot in Cyberspace is dedicated to the diversity within the plant kingdom, and field biology in general. This at a level of secondary school or a bit higher. But of course, you can also just sit back, and enjoy the scenery.

The Fractory - This advanced page will help you learn about fractals: what they are and how to design them, but it will also let you discover more on your own. Fractals are just now emerging as a science. They show an order in seemingly random things, and give us tools with which we can predict the weather, render natural looking objects, and help understand order. You will also play a part in the interactive fractal creation center by designing and displaying fractals you have invented. You can even post your coolest fractals on our fractal message board. (9-12)

Insect Unit - This unit was developed as an introduction to the world of insects for grades 2-3. Each of the four lessons in the unit concentrates on a particular content area: Lesson 1 focuses on language arts, Lesson 2 - science, Lesson 3 - fine arts, and Lesson 4 - music. (2-3)

Amelia Earhart's Flight (World Flight, Inc.) - Provides an ongoing interaction with the flight of Linda Finch, who is reenacting Amelia Earhart's flight around the world. Starts on March 17, 1997 and contains curriculum resources to use with the adventure.

Astronomy - Exploring the Moon ....This is a great detailed site!

Changing Attitudes about Nature Through Bird Identification - It is very easy to do a lesson in bird identification. If you do not have a set of bird cards, make them. You can get a pocket guide by Audubon, and make your own flash cards. Or subscribe to a Wild Bird magazine and cut out pictures to use as flash cards . You do not have to tell students directly that this lesson will keep them from using air rifles and pellet guns to hurt birds; that will come from education. They will tell you that they no longer do this, and that they keep others in their neighborhood s from doing it. I like this unit and the source.

Arctic Animals - " We have chosen some of the most unique arctic animals there are. We have stories to read, great pictures of the animals, interesting facts to share, and some fun activities to do"

Leafy-Greens
Promotional materials such as our Leafy Greens Lesson Plans encourage our younger consumers to understand the nutritional benefits and the cancer-fighting elements of leafy greens; and hopefully to encourage the increase in consumption of leafy greens at home. I used this with Ryan about 1 1/2 years ago and it was good and he loved it.

Build with Kids-Gardening
Children are a natural in the garden. Fresh air, soft grass, bright sun, fragrant flowers, diggable dirt, and tasty tidbits are powerful kid magnets. Gardening is much more "efficient" without little ones underfoot, yet the heart of a garden is not about efficiency. It is in the joy it gives to its gardeners—whatever their ages. This is a wonderful site!!!!!

SCIENCE LINKS AND LESSON PLANS (K-5)
This site contains not only lesson plan links but also other science resources such as publications, museums, online projects, etc. Small, but nice.

PITSCO'S LINK TO ONLINE COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS
This is a very comprehensive alphabetical listing of the many online projects that can be found on the internet. Includes most major online projects such as NASA online and The Jason Project.

GSN Online Project Registry
Global Schoolhouse Network's online project registry. Includes listings of online projects catalogued by the month in which the projects begin. These seems to be mostly teacher and classroom sponsored projects as opposed to some of the majorly funded online projects such as NASA and The Jason Project, but they would be nice small projects without as much involvement.
