Even if you have never been to Pete's Tavern you probably already know this local Gramercy Park legend. Pete's is often seen on television, appearing on CNN, VH-1, BBC, Seinfeld, Law and Order, Sex and the City, Fox Cable News and The Food Network. It has been showcased in several motion pictures, including Ragtime, Endless Love, and the Sony Imax feature Across the Sea of Time. Pete's has also been in many print and television advertisements for such companies as Hanes, Miller Beer and Samuel Adams Brewery.
Pete's Tavern first opened its doors in 1864. From that date to today, it has remained open. This achievement makes Pete's both an official historical landmark and the longest continuously operating bar and restaurant in New York City. Not even Prohibition force Pete's to close its doors: it remained open disguised as a flower shop. Pete's is proud of its history and steadfastly maintains its traditions. It looks as exactly the as same as when its most celebrated regular O. Henry wrote the classic Gift of the Magi here at his favorite booth by the front doors, in 1904.
Pete's Tavern also continues to serve the very best in Italian-American cuisine and its highly prized 1864 Original House Ale. You can also savor a taste of the new as well by enjoying a selection from the Daily Specials Menu which features a touch of the New World style of cooking. So, along with the best Roast Prime Rib of Beef in the city, you can enjoy such dishes as Coconut Shrimp: lightly sauteed with freshly grated coconut and served with cucumber salad and mango chili sauce; or Chicken Nara: a full cut chicken breast sauteed with plum wine sauce and shiitake mushrooms and served with fresh sugar snap peas and homemade carrot mashed potatoes.
