In The Beginning:

I've been a large person most of my life that I can remember. Not grotesquely fat, but nothing you would look at twice in interest. Most of my young adult life, I lingered around the 180-200 pound area. When I realized that I had crossed OVER the 200 pound mark, I started working out a lot, LOTS of jogging on the treadmill. It seemed the more I worked out, the worse I felt. It turned out to be totally unrelated however, during this time I began showing my first signs of Systemic Lupus.

I was working in the deli of a casino. Every night, by the end of my shift, my feet would be KILLING me. When I would go on break, I would sit down and relax, and when the break was over, I could barely stand up!

I was pretty new at the job (a few months) and thought I would wait until my health insurance started before I saw a doctor about it. I was told it started 90 days from date of hire, I was only a few weeks away from it.

As time went on, the pain and fatigue progressed quickly. I finally gave up and went to my doctor. The did a few simple tests, one of which was a 24 hour urine collection. The night before taking the collection back to the doctor, I went outside my house to smoke a cigarette, and while I was standing there, I just vomitted with NO warning, never felt anything coming. In the morning, I decided I better see the doctor in person, not just turn in my "collection." While waiting to see the doctor, I passed out on the examination table. The doctor decided I needed to go to somewhere more advanced, so around 9:00 AM, I was sent to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. (It was finally about 1:00 PM that I was able to get to a phone, and let my wife know that I was sent to the hospital, on her birthday) I went through 2 days of extensive and PAINFUL tests, and it was concluded that I had Systemic Lupus.

Treatment included a year and a half of monthly chemo-therapy treatments (low dose), and HIGH doses of the steroid Prednisone. With my weakened condition, and high steroid dosing, I packed on 130 pounds in just a few months.

I've been struggling with that weight for over 6 years now.
