Guanajuato is one of the most important states in Mexico in all aspects. In history this is the state where the mexican independece war began. Also this place was important to the Spaniards because of the silver and gold mines located here. As to Culture, Guanajauto has one of the oldest universities in the continent and every year, in October, the Festival Cervantino is celebrated with the visit and participation of people from all over the world.
Guanajuato City. capital of the state, has been declared Cultural Patrimony of Mankind by the UNO, due to its historic and beatiful buildings.
Located in the heartland of Mexico, the state of Guanajuato is also strategically situated for trade and investment within one of the most important emerging markets in the world.
Guanajuato represents the 6th largest economy in Mexico. The state is highly diversified and enjoys an enormous potential for industrial activities for manufacturing such as automotive and auto parts, metals, footwear and leather tanning, chemicaland petrochemical, mining, textiles and apparel, tourism and services.
Over 50% of Mexico's population is concentrated within a 250 mile radius around Guanajuato. The state boasts first place in the number of research and development centers in Mexico.
Over US $2 billion have been invested in the State of Guanajuato during the last three years, and the state's dircet exports have totaled over US$ 450 million per year. Twelve of Fortune's Global 500 have plants in Guanajuato. Fifty-seven maquiladoras are operating in the state.
Guanajuato offers a business-oriented market driven economy. Currently the state government and the private sector are receiving international iterest in trade, investment, joint ventures, strategic business alliances and technology transfer in the various manufacturing and business opportunities available.
As a means of promoting and monitoring industrial installation and concentration, the Bajio Industrial Corridor has been developed in the State of Gunajuato, connecting the most important cities from Apaseo El Grande in the southeastern zone of the state, near Queretaro, to San Francisco del Rincon at the western boundary with the State of Jalisco, and representing one of the most important industrial development zones in all of Mexico.
To attend the local needs of original equipment manufacturers (OEM's) and their suppliers, two industrial parks are under construction in the city of Silao, and an air cargo hub will be part of the Guanajuato International Airport, located in the western area of Silao, home of the new General Motors light truck assembly plant.
