GUIDE TO HERBAL TEAS
Many of the herbal teas listed below are sold in grocery and health food stores. Please note that this list applies ony to tea. Dry herbs, tinctures and oils may have very different and stronger effects on your body than a tea. If any tea produces side effects such as dizziness, headache or nausea, do not continue its use.
These teas are SAFE to use as beverages if no more than 2-3 cups are used per day, and have little or no effect on the body when used in moderation:
Alfalfa, Catnip, Chamomile, Chicory Root, Elder Flowers, Fennel, Fenugreek, Ginger, Goldenrod, Hibiscus, Lemon Grass, Linden Flowers, Nettle, Peppermint, Rosehip, Red & Black Raspberry, Red Clover, Spearmint, Slippery Elm Bark, Yarrow.
CAUTION - These teas are known to have some medicinal effect on the body. Use them with caution:
Barberry Leaves, Buchu Leaves, Buckthorn Bark, Burdock, Cascara Sagrada, Dandelion, Dong Quai, Echinacea, Eyebright, Feverfew, Ginseng, Gotu Kola, Horsetail (Shave Grass), Hydrangea, Licorice, Lovage, Mate, Passion Flowers, Scullcap Herb, Senna, Uva Ursi (Bearberry), Valerian Root, Vervain, Yellow Dock.
STOP - These teas are UNSAFE to use without proper advice; they may cause serious illness if not used properly:
Calamus Root, Comfrey, Goldenseal, Hawthorne Berries, Juniper Berries, Life root (Ragwort), Lobelia, Mandrake Root, Mistletoe, Oak Bark, Pennyroyal, St. John's Wort, Wormwood.
WHAT ABOUT HERBAL TEAS FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
Some of the "diet" teas on the market are not safe to use. For example, some contain ingredients like Juniper berries or Uva Ursi (Sagekhomi or Bearberry) which make your body lose water. Others, such as senna, contain strong laxatives. These effects can be dangerous if such herbs are used on a regular basis. Although herbal teas offer a caloric-free beverage for people concerned with weight control, USE OF HERBAL TEAS TO CAUSE WEIGHT LOSS IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
