From the Director, The Reverend
Betty Jordan
At Flemingdon Park Ministry good deeds are
evident.
-
Parent volunteers keep the Summer Lunch program for
the kids...
-
Churches remember to bring food regularly to our
office...
-
Individuals generously support our programs with
good and/or cash donations...
-
A mom decorates the Kids' Corner with her creative
talent and paint.
These are but a few of the "stuff" that keeps us
going. The love of God is expressed in a variety of ways through
many people's hands.
We give thanks for all God's goodness when we
gather for Fellowship and to celebrate the Eucharist.
It is hard to remember the goodness sometimes
when the struggles are great and seem to never end.
-
Not enough money for food when the benefit cheque
is $720 a month for Mom, Dad and a 12-year-old daughter.
-
How to buy a new coat now that winter is here.
-
Trying to think about Christmas presents when the
refrigerator is empty.
The climate of society today has many areas that
has huge potholes that people can fall into.
-
The economics: Cutting back of Welfare Benefits;
where there is no preventative dental work done, forcing folks to only
use the dentist when the pain is so bad that drastic measures are taken.
-
The system of seeking employment makes it difficult
to do a job search because the process of getting a resume together, faxing
it to a possible employer and needing to have a phone to have follow-up
contacts, sets a stage where some cannot be in the running to be considered
for employment.
-
Sexual discrimination is remembered on December 6th,
which marks the anniversary of the massacre in Montreal of women engineering
students. Students killed only because they were women. Women
continue to suffer inequality because of their gender; a slap, a
put-down, all contribute to their oppression.
In Hebrews, we can read that we need to provoke each
other to love and to do good deeds. Provoke is not a soft
nudge on the arm, provoke is a lot stronger. When you provoke
someone, you deliberately and purposefully try to get a reaction.
As a supporter of the Flemingdon Park Ministry,
when was the last time you provoked someone to love and do good deeds for
God?
It seems that each one of us must be deliberate
and purposeful in Being the Body of Christ. We, as individuals,
and as a Christian community, must provoke each other. We
can direct our energies as individuals to our families, friends and neighbours
and together, as the Body of Christ, towards economic institutions
and our lawmakers.
To Love and Do Good Deeds - what a banner
that would make to focus on in the year 1998! As Christians, that
is what we are all about. Friends, that is what we are all about!
I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Blessed
Christmas time and peaceful 1998.
