John Black was born ca. 1810 in Scotland, son of James Black and Elizabeth Brown. He emigrated to Amsterdam,
Montgomery County, New York around 1820-1835. He was a farmer and married Janet Carter from Galway, New
York about 1835. They had at least ten children:

4. John Black, born ca. 1843
5. Robert Black, born ca. 1846
6. Walter Black, born ca. 1849
7. Margaret Black, born ca. 1851

10. William H. Black, born ca. 1859
John Black died in May 1893, leaving Janet a widow. She died shortly after by
1893.

SECOND GENERATION
1. James Black - 1880 census lists James and his family, residing in
Perth. His wife was Katherine (Reynolds), age 34. They
had two daughters - Margaret D. Black, age 12 and Annie age 1. Also living
in the household was Katherine Reynolds, Mother in Law, age 66 and Elisabeth
Reynolds, (no relationship given) age 38.
2. Agnes Black never married.
3. Thomas Carter Black married in 1866 to Margaret McGlashan, born September 1840 in Scotland. They had two children:
1. John Black (no middle name), born May 1, 1868 in Greenbush, New York.
2. Elizabeth Black, born 1870. died in 1896
Thomas Carter Black, like his father, was a farmer. He lived in Hagaman, New York in his early life then
for a period lived in Schodack, NY in that 1800's. He served in the Civil War,
4th Reg. of Heavy Artillery. He was released due to bronchitis and returned
home to Hagaman's Mills. Thomas and Margaret both lived very long years, Thomas died in 1933, aged 93 years and Margaret died shortly after
him in 1935.

5. Robert Black married Hannah Shaw Carter and they resided in Perth, New York. They had six children:
1. William Marvin Black, born 1870
2. Mary E. Black married John Davis
3. Jenny Black
4. Ellie Black
5. A. Edward Black
6. J. Watson Black
7. Margaret Black married surname McDowall/McDowell and at some time moved to
Adair, Adair County, Iowa. In her sister Jennie's will, Jennie Black refers to
her sister by her married name and living in Nebraska.
8. Jane Black, known as "Jennie", died in 1894, never married. Her will states that she passed on the Farmhouse to her brother, William H. Black.
10. William H. Black married Lucy C. and they adopted a son,
Earl Black. They continued to reside in Perth.
William's will was written in 1902 and probated 9 September 1921.

Rev. John Black (John(1), Thomas(2)) married Harriet Eleanor DeMott of New Brunswick, New Jersey. Harriet was born July 2, 1867 and they were wed on her birthday, July 2, 1901 in New Brunswick. Right after that, they moved to North Easton, New York and Rev. Black began his first ministry. They had one son, Thomas DeMott Black, born April 28, 1902. |
Rev. John Black served many First Reformed Churches in Ghent, New Concord, Hawthorne and finally in Wynantskill, New York. In his last years of service to the First Reformed Church of Wynantskill, New York, he married his son, Thomas and new bride, Eleanor Rehm in June, 1927.

Margaret McGlashan was one of nine children born to John McGlashan and Elizabeth Rogers. Elizabeth was born 1814, Scotland and John was born about 1804, also in Scotland. They came to the US in 1843, aboard the ship, The Monument and settled in Perth,
Fulton County, New York also.
Their nine children are:

Janet Carter's parents were Thomas Carter, born 1777 and Agnes Ewing, born 1784, and both born in Scotland. They resided in Earlston until they came to the US in 1832. Thomas Carter died May 2, 1844.
Agnes died August 6, 1866. They settled in Galway, Saratoga County.
Janet's parents both died in New York.
Thomas and Agnes Carter had eleven children:

4. John Carter, born 1817, married Sarah Marshall. They had seven children.
