The Ulines

The very first Uline Family Reunion  occurred August 23, 1998 at the Salem Methodist Church in West Sand Lake, New York, on old Uline land.  From that wonderful day, many met new family members, learned of our genealogy and shared lots of information. As a result, we have started a family newsletter, The Uhlein Family News, which is mailed out quarterly, to keep in touch in between reunions! The dues are $5.00 per year.  If you are interested in more information, Click Here.

Bernhard/Barnard/Barnhardt Uhlein is believed to have been "imported" to Philadelphia in 1756 on the ship Snowchance.   The fact that the passenger list uses the word "imported" and that only male passengers were aboard, may suggest that he was an indentured person. However, this has not been proven.

Variations of the surname have be found:  Uhlein, Uhleine, Uhlene, Uhlen

Barnhardt served in the Revolutionary War, as a private in the Albany County Militia, 6th Regiment and was awarded a land lease for his service in what is now known today as West Sand Lake, New York.  At the time, it was then referred to  "Ulinesville" or "Uline's Corners", as it was one of the largest farms in the area, over 300 acres. They also owned a tavern/store and a grist mill.

Bernhard's last will and testament were probated in November 1804. No cemetery stone exists today to mark his burial, though it is believed that he and his wife, Anna, are said to be buried on their property, in an old cemetery that has been desecrated by property owners in the 1900's.

As a tribute, the Uline Family has posted a Memorial marker in the Elmwood Cemetery in West Sand Lake, this year, 2001.

In later years, the Ulines and other area families involved with land leases of Van Rensselaer would find themselves involved in a turmoil known as the "Anti Rent War" years.  These occurred over several years beginning in the mid 1800's.  A link to give you some idea of what some of our ancestors fought for:

Side note of Weatherwax/Uline related families.
These families were extremely close.  Andreas Weatherwax, father of Anna and Sebastian, fought alongside comrade Bernhard Uhlein during the American Revolution, in the same regiment.  After the war, they were awarded land leases within mere miles of each other.  Both Anna Weatherwax who married Adam Uline, and Sebastian Weatherwax who married Catharina Uline were in fact brother and sister.

Later, in the third generations, John Peter Uline (4b above) would marry Almira Phillips, daughter of Dorothy Weatherwax (sister of Anna and Adam) and James Phillips.
