ORAL HISTORIES and AUTOBIOGRAPHIES
Updated September 20, 1999

I Enjoy Sharing What I Have
Learned in the Process

Through the Association of Personal Historians (APH), training new oral history interviewers in the "Epstein Technique" and employing transcribers and editors in the making of memoirs, I'm finding great satisfaction in mentoring a new generation of individuals who will fill the world's bookshelves with family histories.

BY THOMAS AINLAY JR., PUBLISHER

The joy of delivering finished audio tapes, compact discs and beautifully bound books to my clients is only matched by the happiness I feel in being able to create meaningful work for a growing team of specialists. All of the people involved in producing Legacy Memoirs products work out of their homes. They often tell me how much they enjoy being able to work at their own pace on projects that will give so much pleasure to generations to come.

My focus now is to widen the scope of our publishing activities geographically and culturally. The development of our services in Japan is moving ahead rapidly, with our first local-language book already published and a number of new interviewers being trained in the "Epstein Technique" in Japanese. We have recently undertaken our first business history. We are expanding our network of representatives in the United States. And we have plans to develop capabilities in other languages and other countries.

Have I dreamt too big? Have I moved too slowly? Have I neglected something very important?

Happily, the tribute to my father is already half-finished. In fact, the hardest part is done: getting started! Thanks to the Internet, I've been able to locate people who knew him even before I was born. The research has been difficult, but the process of discovery has been absolutely fascinating.
