PATTERNS

Have you noticed how many ways you can buy patterns today? You open a sewing book or magazine and you're likely to find patterns inside. Some are full sized while others must be copied and enlarged. Every issue of Sew Beautiful that I've bought has had not just one but several patterns inside, something I personally find delightful. So for the price of the book or magazine you also get a pattern

Some such as Simplicity's Art to Wear designed by Shirley Botsford are found in the center of a book of instructions. Pick up any Kwik-Sew Book and you'll find the master pattern included.

Patterns are sold as companions to books: Sewing the New Classics by Carol Parks and The Stretch & Sew Guide To Sewing On Knits by Ann Person are two that come to mind. Then of course there are the patterns we usually buy McCall's, Vogue etc. Take a look around you'll find them everywhere, check out the wonderful variety of patterns available. There are patterns for everyone, it doesn't matter whether you're a beginner or an accomplished seamstress. One thing I can promise is that you'll have fun looking!

SEW FUNNY

My youngest daughter Rachel was laughing about her one and only attempt at sewing today. When she was about sixteen she had to take a sewing class in school, they taught her the basics so she decided she was ready to sew a whole outfit. Well she rummaged through my stash and found just the fabric she wanted to use, a nice blue velour. The pattern she chose was for a loose fitting sweat suit so she had no problem cutting it out and marking it. Rachel had the top done in no time but when it came to the pants I wasn't around and she figured the top was easy, why not the pants. She stitched them up and when I came home she went upstairs to put on her new outfit. The whole family was waiting to see her efforts and congratulate her, but when she stepped into the living room everyone just stared. For a minute we couldn't figure out what was wrong with the pants, then it came to me, Rachel had sewn straight across the from the bottom of one pant leg to the other. When I told her we'd have to take out the stitches and redo them she didn't want to go to the trouble so Rachel ended up with the first MC Hammer pants in the neighborhood in fact the only Hammer pants. She wore those pants and all her friends thought it was really cool that she had pants like MC Hammer.
