JO's Nap Blanket
This is a quick and easy nap blanket that I made for my granddaughter to take to
nursery school. She takes it with her everywhere, and the school personnel found it useful
in teaching her and the other children songs. I used a pre-printed panel but you're free to
use any fabric you like. The pre-printed panels are available in most fabric stores and are
not expensive to purchase. The blanket can be made any size you want and that will
determine how many panel you'll need to buy.
The materials needed are:
1 pre-printed juvenile panel (I used a song book)
2 1/2 yds. of fabric for backing
Quilt binding(optional)
2 1/2 yds. of quilt batting
Thread
Walking or Even Feed Foot (if available)
- Pre shrink all materials.
- Lay the backing wrong side up(it can be taped to the surface to prevent shifting).
- Place the quilt batting on top of the backing.
- Place the pre-printed panel right side down on top of the batting. Pin all layers
together or you can baste it.
- If you're planning to use quilt binding to finish the outside edges, place the
pre-printed panel right side up.
- Stitch around three sides of blanket leaving the top open for turning (use a 1/2" to
1" seam).
- For those using the quilt binding stitch around all four sides since you won't need an
opening for turning.
- Turn the blanket inside out so that the right side of the panel and the backing is now
on the outside.
- The backing will be longer than blanket at this point.
- Make a 1/4" fold at the top of the backing and press.
- Fold the backing down so that it covers the raw edge of the panel and stitch in place.
- Use the separations between the pages as a guide and stitch horizontally and
vertically.
- Now would be a good time to try your hand at free motion quilting or add extra lines
of stitching if you want to make it more like a traditional quilt.
- Quilt binding can be sewn around three sides at this point.
Your blanket is now ready for use.
