Sometimes when people decide to learn to sew they want to know what tools they'll need with the sewing machine. I tell them some tools are needed and others are wanted simply because they make a project easier. High on my list of sewing room needs is a good book to familiarize you with sewing terms and basic techniques. Two of my favorites are Simplicity's Sewing Book and The Complete Sewing Course. If you can find someone to give lessons especially on your brand of machine I suggest you take the lessons. Listed below are what I consider essential sewing tools:
A good book on the basics of sewing. My favorites are Simplicity's Sewing Book and The Complete Sewing Course.
Sharp sewing shears(scissors)
Pinking shears to finish seam edges
An assortment of machine needles for different fabric weights
Hand sewing needles
A zipper foot makes inserting zippers much easier
Several bobbins
Press cloth
A steam iron that gives a lot of steam
A tailor's ham and seam roll gives a professional look to your garments
A comfortable chair
Yard stick and tape measurers
Pins
Fabric marking tools (tracing paper, marking pens, tailor's chalk, tracing wheel, etc.)
Small sharp scissors or a buttonhole tool to open buttonholes
Seam ripper to remove stitches
Thread, stay away from the really cheap thread, it's only good for basting
Waste baskets, you'll be surprised how much you use them
After you get started you'll add other tools to this list I'm sure. You'll have a tool stash as well as a fabric and pattern stash. So I'll just say happy sewing!
