If you're looking for something to watch during your own personal slumber party, or for a little something to keep your interest while you're having a personal "girl's night in," these are good bets.
Group Movies
- Grease
Not only is it a great story, it's a wonderful little romance, sure to bring back high school memories for at least someone in the group. Even if it doesn't, you'll all know all the lyrics by heart, and someone will begin singing aloud, which will get everyone else involved. Always a sure crowd-pleaser. And besides, the Pink Ladies even have their own slumber party. How can you forget "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee?"
- The Rocky Horror Picture Show
As long as you don't think anyone at the party will be terminally offended by weirdness, transvestism, omnisexuality, etc, this is a terrifically fun group movie (especially if anyone there has been to it in the theater and knows all the call-back lines). Besides, the music is TERRIFIC.
- When Harry Met Sally
Sigh. What can I say, this one works well for both groups and alone. In a group of women, you will find that A)It's a great romance B)It's very funny C)That this will hit home for at the very least ONE woman present. There will also be plenty to discuss.
Alone? Try these.
- Eat Drink Man Woman
This is a quiet story, funny at times, a story about a family. Once you're hooked it will not let your attention go until it's over. It involves the father, a patriarch who's passionate about cooking, one daughter who is content to let her life go by without loving anyone else after one big heartbreak, a daughter who's wrapped herself up in her career, and a daughter who's intent on wrecking her life...at first glance, anyway. Nothing is as it first seems, and this family is wonderful to watch.
- Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
I include this in "alone" rather than in "Groups" mainly because I'm not sure how many out there like old movies like I do. If you have anyone in a crowd that you think might not like them, popping one in can be a tense time. But this movie is FANTASTIC. The music's great, and Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell play showgirls on a cruise ship in the 50's. It's funny, and I swear you'll be singing along before you know it.
- Guarding Tess
Nicholas Cage is a secret service agent guarding the widow of our previous president; the widow is Tess, played by Shirley MacLaine. He is funny, wonderful, and touching in this, and she is a riot. Definitely well worth watching.
- Beautician & the Beast
Ok, so you may not love Fran Drescher. You may think the story's a little thin. You have some good points there. But I found it a truly fun movie to watch and a sweet, harmless, enjoyable fairy tale. It was very good for me when I was in a sucky, depressed, "why-me" mood after a breakup. Give it a chance, it's very cute.
- Sleepless in Seattle
Not as funny as "When Harry Met Sally," but every bit as romantic. Sweet, heartbreaking, cute, and wonderful.
- An Affair to Remember
The movie you simply HAVE to see to fully enjoy "Sleepless." Romantic, heartbreaking, tearjerking, and ultimately terrific. I'd say they don't make em like this anymore, but they do...."When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless!"
