CONCLUSION |

In the period between 1845 and 1900, fast paced style changes caused an equally swift series of drastic transitions in wimen's underwear. While they began the period caged in a tight corset, numerous thick petticoats, stockings and garters, they ended the period in a slightly less damaging corset and a more reasonable A-frame dress. The crinoline, bustle, and bum roll, as well as the voluminous trains and draperies were removed in favor of a slightly more managable figure. In addition, the appearance of bloomers also offered society's ladies a feminist choice in opposition to the cage, they could wear pantaloons with a token mid-length skirt. This, as well as long term trends in clothing throughout this period clearly pre-saged the suffragette movement in America, while an important part of suffrage movements in Northern Europe and Latin America. |
