THE ELIYEH BEREH AWERBUCH FAMILY TREE

Eliyeh Bereh was a Baal Agoleh and Flax Merchant - that is, he owned a wagon and would transport people in it while trading in flax. There is a story that people loved to travel with Eliyeh Bereh, especially when my grandfather Tsemakh went with him, as the latter would entertain the travellers by singing songs, and he was musical and had a good voice, so it lightened the lengthy journey.


The family lived in Rietavas ("Riteveh" in Yiddish).

They had five children

Tsemakh, Rafael, Leah, Peseh and Roche-Tilla.

All the children except Roche-Tilla emigrated to South Africa between the years 1898 and 1910.
