There are a number of excellent books, articles, and autobiographies that I would like to recommend.

 | I especially liked the book "Trans-sister Radio" by Chris Bohjalian. Although it is a fiction, the book is written incredibly well and it is hard for me to believe that the author himself is not transgendered.  | The best book on dealing with family issues is the book Trans Forming Families: Real Stories About Transgendered Loved Ones, by Mary Boenke, 164 pages, ISBN: 0966327217, $13.95 at amazon.com. It is all about success stories with preserved families. Rather than the views of the transitioning individuals, the opinions of parents, children, and other relatives are nicely portrayed. |
