Two hooded and cloaked figures disembarked off the transport. Brown robes swirled in the air currents brought up by the ascending craft. Entering into the Temple, the pair lowered their hoods. His face was serious, grim, yet he had a faint tender smile for her. She cast her eyes downward.
"Padawan," he told her. "Wait for me in our rooms. I'll be there as soon as I can." He lifted her chin with his hand. "Do not fret. It's not the end of the world. We will . . ." he trailed off. "I need to seek advice and talk with Master Windu, first."
"Yes, master," she said faintly.
Mace Windu walked a path in the Garden of a Thousand Fountains with slow paced steps with his hands clasped behind his back mirroring his companion's actions. With deliberate cadence, boots clicked in counterpoint to the hushed atmosphere. Mace brought his attention up from the stone-flagged walkway to regard the Knight at his side. "The mission went well? The Council has not received your report as yet."
"Yes, the mission went well."
The pair continued to walk while passing falling water spraying a fine mist in the air like prisms sparkling with refracted light. Verdant foliage draped overhead from ancient trees massive and lordly from their slow growth accumulated over the centuries. Ephemeral flowers vied for attention stippling the green with a vibrant palette of colors expending their energy in a flush of joyous exuberance.
"The mission went well," the man repeated. He plucked a leaf from a bush and tortured the unoffending piece of vegetation by tearing it into small pieces. Bits of green trailed the pair.
It was clear not all was as satisfactory as the mission. Mace repeated the statement as a question while stressing the same word as had his friend. "What troubles you, my friend?" Another bush, another leaf sacrificed.
A stone bench beckoned. They accepted the invitation. Bits of green dropped to form a small pile of litter.
"I have," the man said hesitatingly. "Overstepped my bounds."
Mace shut his eyes. "How so?"
"I've acted dishonorably," he said. "With my apprentice."
Mace rubbed his temples. The Knight looked up from his leaf-litter pile at his feet and looked fully at Mace. "She's pregnant."
Mace shook his head and drew a deep breath, exhaling it slowly. "That's the third one this month," he said to himself.
Obi-Wan Kenobi scampered through the bushes giggling. Qui-Gon Jinn chased after him.
Mace ran his hands over his face."The Council really has to rethink our training methods. This master and padawan thing is not working."
